Fuel problem / Fuse problem

Good day to all,

This week, I got rear-ended in a parking alot. No big damages, everything is fixed now. However, this morning, leaving from work, my car, all of the sudden stalled and I can't fire it back up. I looked at the relays in the trunk since I assumed that, from my accident, they might have been damaged. They seemed fine, but I know that even though they look fine the problem might be internal.

Another thing resulting from this is that the fuel pump fuse under the dash (15amp) is always burning. I tried 3 different 15 amp fuses and they all died.

Can anyone help me out?

Thanks in advance

Matt

when you turn the car to the run position, is that when it blows? or when you try to start?

i wonder if the accident is truly related. i don't know the quirks of cars totally, but my guess is the pump went bad.

Damn dude, looks like you might have the problem I had. Althought my problem wasnt fuel related, it was electrical. If you had a shop repair the car I'd take the car back and have them look at it since the problem was probably exposed when they had everything off but instead they might've just continued taking care of the body.

If you fixed it yourself then I'd suggest you take things apart and start tracing wires like the GFs father and I did. You might just find some clipped wires touching, melted together or simply exposed with no insulation.

Best of luck and try not to TRY to start the car, it might just start on fire

sss!!! hadnt thoutght of a fire! DO NOT TRY putting it in run, until you can diagnos the problem. dont want sparks or heat in the enclosed gas tank.

Well I didnt mean fire so much cuz of the gas but because of a short (if one). His fuel pump and tank should be fine (unless theres short and burned out pump) and by the way he described that the accident was earlier this week and is already fixed, kinda tells us that it wasnt that bad of an accident.

Maximus, can you give us more detail on accident like how bad was it? Got pics?

EDIT: Ben you jackass!!!!!

Well the accident was not bad at all. The body was missaligned as well as my trunk. I took a hammer and a piece of wood and brought everything back in place. The trunk latch was also bent and now the trunk closes well although it is not like it was before.

I am wondering if, while trying to realing the trunk, I hit a relay or something?

Do you guys think that a bad relay would cause my fuse to burn?

By the way, my fuse seem to burn when I start the car because, when I start it, it runs for a few seconds then it dies all of the sudden.

Lets say it was a bad week this week. I also hit my front fender with my snowmobile which caused my door to not open....fixed.

And, on the pump problem, there was a mini-van behing and I backed into it. That put a nice big dent into my rear, driver side fender. Hopefully the week ends tonight. I might have better luck next week ! hahah. Oh well like we say.....s*it happens !

I'm sure your week was better than both of my past 2 weeks from 12-30 til 2 days ago but I'm not gonna get into that.

My wiper fuse would blow immediately after turning the key in ignition...and it was a short. Did you use new relays for all 3 or used?

I did not change relays yet. It happened this morning and I just got off a night shift so I was tired. Everything is closed tommorow so I will look into that on Monday. I am gonna try to swap them with other ones and see if it works. If not, I will take it to a local shop.

You are talking about 3 relays? I only see 2 in the trunk, where is the 3rd one? In the engine compartment?

Concerning your bad luck. Can you resume it quickly? To make me feel better hehe !

Only swap in relays that have the same color, as a general rule. I'm not quite sure about the green/orange ones in the trunk are swappable or not but I doubt it. I believe (w/o opening my FSM) one of the relays is suppose to shut off the fuel pump in an accident so get one (both?) from the JY or dealer.

Sorry I might have caused some confusion here. When I said swap, I meant replace with other ones. I am french, so sometimes I mix up words ! hehe

Peace !

Whoopsie, you said you tried 3 15amp fuses..I misread sorry.

AS for my bad luck; December 30th I got a 103.2 degree fever and body pain until January 4th almost went in to emergency room cuz if you reach 104 you can go brain dead.

AND on Saturday January 5th I got intense stomach pain after one day of feeling better, got bloated and very sharp pain. Sunday night after feeling the same my mom took me to emergency room thinking it was my apendix. Had tons of xrays, they found obstruction, made me drink 3 cups of clear nasty stuff called abstract or dye, puked a bit, waited 2 hours drank half cup more and then took catscan which came out normal.

Finally at 5am they told me they had a room for me in the hospital so I could get out of ER. They kept me 5 days for observation, took blood twice at 6am from a dr that looks like DR Nick from the simpsons, had IV and antibiotics injected for the whole 5 days. From Saturday to Monday night I didnt/couldn't eat ANYTHING. Had morphine injections for pain every 4 hours but didnt do much. When I got out of hospital 2 days ago, I went to buy my antibiotics and they were $110 USD for 7 pills and $26 for 21 pills totaling $136 that I could've spent on a Blemhco rear strut tower brace or a speeding ticket I have. ALso I havent worked since last year due to this so I'm really broke.
Oh and the best part is that when I was released, I asked what the "specialist" that was my doctor had determined the problem was, they said it was "Diarrhea". right...
Hope this makes you feel better about your week lol

EDIT: Oh and I forgot to say that due to my medication, I cant drive or operate any machinery so that makes things even worse!

Well I definetely had a much better week than yours. Mine was just material matters, yours was pain and suffering. I hope everything comes back to normal for you very soon. In the meantime, I thank you for your help.

Ciao !

i'd follow the wires from the relay to look for a chaffed wire.

If you have a multimeter and know how to operate it I would tackle it this way:

With the ignition switched off, remove the fuse, stick the 2 probes of the current meter in the fuse holder terminals and have somebody switch on the ignition (don't start yet) - get a value for the current flowing there. (you have about 3 seconds to do that before the safety relay will cut out)

Switch off ignition

Lift rear seat, remove pump cover and insert meter in series with one of the wires running tot the pump (preferably live as earth can also be established through the pumps own metal body/mounting) - have somebody switch on the ignition (don't start yet) - get a value for the current flowing there. (you have about 3 seconds to do that before the safety relay will cut out).

If the values are the same the pump is responsible - if the values are different (measurement in the fuse holder bigger) then you have a wiring problem.

I would remove the relays and then turn on the ignition and see if the fuses pop. This would point to a wire short problem going to the relays. Possible a wire got crimped or cut during the body work. The fuel pump relay wires run around the drivers side rear fender. If it doesn't pop, then it may be the wiring going from the relays back to the fuel pump. I think a bad relay would cause an open circuit rather than a short (i.e. shorts should pop the fuse, not open circuits). If this doesn't pop the fuse, replace the relays, then pull the rear seat, disconnect the fuel pump and retry the above test. If the fuse pops then it is the wiring from the relays to the pump.

might wanna invest in a15 amp circuit breaker with as many fuses as you'll go through

If you are blowing fuses, it would suggest a short somewhere. Maybe a wire has rubbed a bare spot? That is where I would begin the search.

My car is fixed. It turned out to be a wire disconnected at the fuel pump. Everything is back to normal now ! Thanks for your help !
