3rd gen ve 5spd for $200 worth it

Found a 3rd gen Ve 5spd for 200 bucks got 170k motor locked up decent interior(got great interior for it) needs passenger side doors and a fender along with drivers side door. Had doors but dad hauled them off so is it work the 200 and all the work. $700 motor and $100 a pull it for doors. I can do all the labor myself.

Depends on what you want to do with it.

there's pick-a-parts around here that will sell an engine out of anything for $200- Cavalier to Corvette. they used to have a bunch of VEs..

but do the math on it if you just want to fix it and sell it.
purchase price + repair parts price + your labor. Is that more or less than possible selling price?
If you can make money on it, go for it. if you can't, then you make the choice.

or are you buying it for a car to keep? if so, then how much its worth isn't really a big issue, unless you can find a running car for less than it would cost you to get that one running.

all that said, is the car anywhere near Houston? I'm trying to find a car to build for the 24 Hours of LeMons... (http://www.24hoursoflemons.com/) I need a beater car to play with.

Matt, that sounds like a lot of fun. How serious are you about doing it?

Is victory even possible with a car like this? You do realize that the only way you'll probably win in your class is with a crazy pit strat and an exceptionally good driver? Thats also not mentioning if everything goes fine mechanically. I think the 3rd gen looks cooler then it really is IMO.

Edit: oops, just noticed what you were actually reffering to.. lol

the 24hrs of lemons is about picking a good donor more than anything else IMO
much like the 200x challenge is, except more lunacy in the challenge IMO.

I saw that posting... might go look at it even, but to repair/resell instead of LeMons. A small, light, I-4 car might be better.

I've got about 10 people lined up and 3 different cars we're looking at now.

the strategy to win this race is simply to finish it. So many cars that start the race break down before the end. so you want to pick something fairly reliable and mechanically strong (i.e. takes a lickin'). The last few years many of the main cars to beat have been 240Zs, 240SXs, NX2000s, things like that.
But a Maxima would be fun too. many of the guys we're looking at fielding for the driver team own them and drive them daily- and have even done several track events in them... so we'd do pretty well on that department.
