Can an Adjustable Catalytic Converter Be Finished Into Place With a Propane Torch?

Has anyone on here positioned their three way catalyst that was not a direct fit model? I'm having trouble locating a direct fit model for a good price here. The only ones I've found are adjustable and need welding I think.
