couple ?'s
couple ?'s
allright as some of yall know if something does'nt feel right with my car then it bothers me.
the first one is when i was cleaning out my car the other day the fuel pump was running...with the key off.
the fuel pump ran for about less than a minute.
the battery has'nt been dead.
i mean i left her sitting for about a week with out starting her and she started right up.
the 2nd one is my downshift response.
lately sometimes when it's really hot under the hood it'll be delayed.
today was it's worse.
i was trying to pass and she down shifted to 2nd (when she usually skips over second and go right to first), but eventually she went to 1st gear.
any advice...

1. Dunno.. Gremlins?
stock pump should only run when ignition is on.
If it's running when off, you may look into the relays that control the pump. there's one under the hood somewhere and another in the trunk near the latch for some reason.
2. sounds like your tranny is getting old. first thing to do is change the fluid and remove the valve body and clean it out. there's a lotta crap that gets built up in the tiny passages in 15+ years. also pull out and clean the shift solenoids. same deal there.
paying $100 for a power tranny flush may be easier for you if you don't have the time or abaility to tear down the valve body.. valve body isn't hard, just messy and fairly time consuming. and you'd better have a proper service manual- there's a very detailed step-by-step on removal and teardown in there that you'll have to follow or you're skrood.
last thing to check is the tranny computer. I've heard they can get a bit wonky over time and will cause crap like this.. replacing the computer is sometimes necessary to cure the sloppy shifting. why I don't know, but I've seen it before. tranny worked perfectly when my friend took his to the shop and they ran it with a $$$test equipment tranny controller thingy$$$.. so they got a junkyard computer and it ran a billion times better than the old one.
hope that helps. good luck.

thanks let me give a run down on the tranny:
i drained and refilled completely.
added a stacked plate trans cooler.
also the downshift just happened.
i went out of town for about a week and my mom drove the car for a few minutes.
as for the fuel pump.
now that i remember it's been doing that for awhile...well it seems when the engine is hot though.

My 89se does the fuel pump thing occassionally too, but it makes more of a grinding noise than when it runs normally. Unfortunately there is no consistency (hot/cold). It hasn't hurt anything yet... Sorry that wasn't much help.
thats okay...you helped.
i was starting to feel like an *** there.
but you posted.
i just looked in my fsm it seems the fuel pump is controlled by the ecu.
well certain times.
it send s a 20hz pulse signal.
it then goes into saying that the pump is ranned at full voltage when the engine is cold, starting, or when the engine is hot...

I can tell you right now that i've also experienced the fuel pump phenomenon. It doesn't sound normal like when priming after turning the key, it's more of a loud buzzing sound and lasts for about 10 seconds. I swapped my pump awhile back with one that had the sending unit for the digital dash and I don't remember it doing it since. So you might want to try replacing it if it bothers you enough. It could possibly be a fire hazard. My Grandpa had a Ford Lightning that had a recall while back regarding a short somewhere that had burnt up a few of them while parked. That's a stretch, I doubt it would happen, but electrical problems around 15 gallons of fuel is something to take a look at..

I have heard that noise after turning off and getting out
more on my old gxe ,i always thought it was part of the
"evaporative emission control system" F.S.M. ef+ec section
"the fuel vapor from the sealed fuel tank is sent to the charcoal
canister thru the vapor vent line" i guess when pressure builds in the fuel tank after the pump stops pumping (like how my plastic gas can will bulge out from pressure if i leave the capS too tight) ,it flows to the charcoal canister which stores it until the intake manifold sucks it in?
this way it doesnt vent to the atmosphere

buddy I've driven your car and have driven beside you. For the miles it has; it drives just fine, I just think you got used to my 5spd from the Atlanta-chicago drive this past weekend.
As for the fuel pump issue, you've heard my 3rd gen do it before as well, it bothers me but I almost think its kinda normal.

lol!!!WTF!LOL!
i don't think the fact i drove your car for about 5 hours is the issue.
and yea now that i'm getting my energy back seems i can focus more too.
so yea it did dawn on me when you 3rd gen did that.
could be a helpful feature like keeping the injectors cool when the engine is hot.
and this one may sound weird, but it could also be a way for the ecu to test it by applying the 12volts to see if the pump works the way it should.
i mean there is a trouble code for it....
