Max Goes Up in Smoke - Very Scary
Max Goes Up in Smoke - Very Scary
Get this guys, this is the 2nd Refurb starter from this company. The first one I used for 3 months prior. It intermittently would do the click thing and no start, but then would start on the 3rd try. It did however work though.
So I take it back to get another that I hope would be 'perfect'. Instead I put this in JUST after my test drive for all the new exhaust components just finished tonight. Then when I'm at the gas station, I go to start, and it doesn't start, the cars off then this insane motor sound kept running even after I removed the key. It went for like 3 minutes, then INSANE smoke started comming out of the engine bay, so I lifted the hood. I knew it was the starter.
What the hell happened, anyone know? Is there something more serious here that the car MADE the starter fail like that? Does this bloody burning hurt the car, maybe damage the computer or battery? Is my flywheel damaged - I heard a grind sound. When I parked it home, I felt the battery and it's warm.
The way I got it started to get home, was I disconnected the thin wire going to the solenoid motor, and jumped that connector from the starter to the +ve battery and the car started after 4 tries...but very pathetically.

umm...damn so you said you heard a hum/grind sound for 3minutes?
or just heard the humming noise.
the solenoid could've gotten kinda jam causing the motor to run.
are'nt you the one where your battery wire was smoking?

yeah, the smoke is from the battery getting the crap beaten out of it because the starter kept drawing power when it shouldn't have. I would do some serious checking of the battery and the starter wiring for damage before going anywhere you son't want to walk back from.
Thanks guys. The battery is visually OK, and the smoke was definately from below where the starter is. The battery was only slightly warm when I felt it and the cables weren't hot. The starter smoked like crazy only after that buzzing motor sound started going after I removed the key from the ignition.
