trunk question

This is probably a dumb question but I would like for someone to answer it for me. I recently got a 92 SE. The trunk lid is in good shape, and it has a spoiler with the 3rd brake light. Well I'm really not a big fan of spoilers any more. So I am wondering if a GXE (spoilerless trunk lid) would allow me to use the same tail light set up and everything else the same...just with out the spoiler? I think the answer is yes, but these cars a new to me.

Also does anyone make an M3 style trunk lip for these cars?

you can get a GXE rear shelf and CHMSL and harness from the JY, and wire the hot wire into your spoiler harness and just ground the black wire to the bracket for the CHMSL

What in the world is "CHMSL"? and do I still need what ever this is even though I already have an SE trunk lid in good condition?

center high mounted stoplight
aka 3rd brakelight

i was thinking you wanted to ditch the spoiler in favor of a bare trunklid right?

see the spoiler has the light IN IT... if you remove the spoiler you remove the brake light. therefore you have to install a brake light in the window to keep your car road-legal.

Yes, I do want to ditch the spoiler in favor of a smooth trunk. I was not even thinking of the whole third brake light thing.

Would it be easier for me to get the rear parcel shelf out of a GXE so it would have the hole/fittings for a brake light in the rear window?

If I decide not to do this. Is there an easy or common way to attach the rear spoiler? Mine is starting to come off on one side.

shhhh...

I'm not even sure of your (The OP's) question really... Are you asking if by disconnecting the spoiler brake light will your other brake lights function normally? If so, the answer is yes. I've been running without one for a good while now. If you want to be legal, you can get the CHMSL out of the rear speaker deck of a GXE and run the brake light wires previously in your trunk, up through the car to where the GXE brake light is.

edit: on a side note... Virginia's road laws are probably a lot more strict than FL's so installing the third brake might be a good idea.

I am not worried about the wiring...I can make that happen. I am just wondering what is required. Basically I want the same look you ^^ have. But I would also like to have a third brake light in the window.

Basically the whole point of this is that I like a spoilerless trunk better than one with a spoiler, and I wanted to make sure this is how I go about doing it.

just follow the instructions in post #2 and you're set. what color is your interior?

anyhow, to reattach the spoiler, get something like gorilla glue, or something really sticky.l

benstoked has an alternate method involving bolts but I don't know if it turned out well. bennnnnnn can you let us know if that worked? if so can you post pics of what you did?

I think one of the members here added or relocated the third brake light to his trunk to have an exterior spoilerless 3rd light, but that took a little fab work. The easiest method is what Cape suggested.

the other thing I recommend you to do is to change the torsion bars to the spoilerless ones. If you do not then your trunk will fly up when you pop since you just reduced it's weight significantly.

they did it back in 07. early 07 because I had my STS at that point in time withit's trunk mounted 3rd brake light.

quoted, to make sure this is seen.
I took my spoiler off, temporarily, to refasten it to the lid, but while it was off, that bish nearly knocked me out by flying up when I popped the trunk. if I had been a 1/4 inch closer (it scraped the hairs on my short, little goatee...)

edit: its not just the weight, its the leverage. the spoiler is not that heavy (mebe 5, 8 lbs?), but since it sits so far away from the pivot point, its heavy.

yeah,my 92 se came with the trunk lid torsion bars removed and sitting in the trunk and ive put them on but they dont hold the trunk up but it is way less
heavy with them on(really heavy with no bars on when i got it)so i took them
off again and they seem to be identical, and only go on one way?
*does any one know how they go on ?or did i do it wrong?*
OR were mine bought from a non spoiler
trunk lid parts car?they are the correct color(gold)
oh,and the reason they were off was because of the custom rear dash
some previous owner did had plastic cylinders hanging down as ports?in the
speaker holes and a huge square hole cut in
the middle of the rear deck metal for more ports?i guesss
I just put in a bose rear dash and have round speakers(6.5's i think)
oh and i paint all my bose emblems black since there is no bose anymore

I have a 91 SE 5spd.....rear spoiler is pulling up on sides. How did you refasten it to the lid?

superglue. if it's REALLY rotted you might need to pull the spoiler off and put some filler in there to flatten the bottom surface of it.. but i have heard that superglue works if you put a cinder block (covered with something soft) over the end to let the glue dry.

I used some two part epoxy, secured a couple of bolts in the goo and let them set while it hardened. then I drilled a couple of new holes in my trunk lid, securing the spoiler with nuts into the bolts that are pernamently affixed in the spoiler. (I really don't recommend using this method to everyone...)

I'll take some pics tomorrow. the reason I don't recommend it is because it could be really easy to screw up, and destroy your spoiler, leaving gaping holes in your trunk lid, and no chmsl, which many states require for inspections.
