You know with Greeny leaving, yes he will leave in time, it gets me thinking about how the 3rd gen is slowly dying. Most of the discussions here are, frankly, ricer fantasies.
I know a car can mean different things to different people. Everyone has the right to do what ever they want with their car, but I'm saddened that very few people here seem to consider their car worth anymore than its cash value. Do you have any clue how much money you are saving every year that you can live without making a car payment? And if you put that money somewhere where it can grow...thats another discussion.
I'm gonna get all choked up here, I even rented Menace II Society today. When I was a kid growing up in the early 90s if someone came down the street in a Maxima, you wanted to be that guy. I am I the only person who sees this as a classic car? I read somewhere that the cars most people love forever are the ones that caught their eye around puberty, no joke. Well for me thats my 3rd gen Maxima, it belonged to a friend of the family.
Now I've gone on to do pretty well in the last few years and could probably go out and buy any new car I want, but I'm keeping the Maxima. Sometimes I go and read the forums for older european cars just for some inspiration from like minded people. Why doesn't anyone love old Japanese cars? These cars were so much better than the European cars of the 80s and 90s. Yet all people seem to with Japanese cars from that era is run them into the ground and then part them out.
I'm taking a stand. I'm gonna get a professional paint job, shampoo the interior and keep this classic car forever.

I haven't been on the org in a long time, and I came on here to see if other folks, too, were thinking that it was about time to turn in the old maxima.
I've got a 1995. According to edmunds, it's worth $955 in "average" condition. That's effing depressing! Especially considering I've spend $1,500 in the past year on repairs.
Of course, even if I spent $1500 per year in repairs, that would be less than 3 typical car payments per year.
But yeah, when is it time to call it quits?

Automar ir right on. At one point in time the muscle cars of the 60s and 70s took a hard turn and no one would buy them, but the mentality of the people at the time wasnt to have new car each year and why automakers back then encourage DIY repairs. the late 80s and 90s saw the throw away car culture to which is sai to say our cars fell into. i dont see anyone at the barret jackson auction selling a mint condition 1992 Maxima SE 15 years from now. our cars are great, i want to hag on to mine as long as i can no matter how much it falls apart. But like greeny a day will come when i say its been enough its time to move on. And as much as would love to garage my max with all the other cars i may own i dont have Lionel Richie's money to hold on to my first car (his was a 240Z.)

I have over 100 hours in labor logged into a project that is nearing completion. Plus another project which I can't even estimate how much time I have invested.
So, just because there aren't a lot of threads about custom projects, doesn't mean they aren't in progress

Haha... my dad and I always joke around about how the ole turd gen is a classic.
He originally bought the car in feb of 92 from Bankston Nissan (as a 91 model) in TX. Since then it has lived in upstate NY and sunny CA. For about 7 years it has sat in the driveway. I have recently picked up interest in fixing it up and using it as a car to learn on (as far as working on). We plan on doing the rear disc swap and some minor bodywork as well as cleaning up the interior (possibly dying some things..). The car has a lot more space to work on than cars of now so that is definitely a plus.. and its a lot more simple.
Long live the max!

I plan on keeping my 89 as long as the elements don't get the best of it. It's still running strong though. The plans I have for it to keep it looking as new as possible is a new paintjob, and a new interior (reupholster leather and replace carpet.) I never saw that many Maximas when I was growing up, but I fell in love with mine when my dad bought it. We're the third owners; the second being my uncle and the first a close friend of his.
, but the ve/vg warpspeed pipes are different, the front manifold connection on the ve warpspeed is about 1/4/-3/8 inch short of making the fit on the vg...They will fit if you have access to a pipe bender though..
And you are still getting them, but not by me.
Wait, You don't have a 3rd Gen Maxima?
Now I flame you.

Greeny decision, as well is some people here, make me want to start an opinion/theory thread about 3rd Gen people. In time. In time.
But I'm 3rd gen for life.

Sorry y'all - it is inevitable that this would happen. Parts and especially time gets scarce, new priorities arise, life changes things. But it IS IMPORTANT that those that are still passionate about these cars stay involved. Little bit of my history: I'm now just coming into the fold. For years I restored, swapped, drove American musclecars. Started out with Pontiacs, then got into Mopars. I've redone some sweet (and now very expensive) rides. I'm probably a bit older than most on this forum, now with graying hair, wife, 3 early teen kids, 2 dogs, 2 cats, and a new house to finish. There are lots of things competing for my time. And now with the economy the way it is, I don't think I'll be able to move up to a newer Maxima like I planned. So - with your help, I'll do some repairs to the beloved Maxima, proudly drive it for a couple more years, and it will give me time to find a cream puff low mileage 5-speed 20th anniversary 2001. By that time my daughter and one of my sons will be needing a ride, and I can't think of a better ride to give them than the Max.
For a while in the early 90's I was into the 2.2 L shelby Dodges. Big bang for the buck. The was a BIG online presence for these cars, but then the performance parts supply dried up. And the crappy cars started falling apart. At least with the Max, the cars are totally solid, and they did make a whole bunch of them making parts gathering a whole lot easier.
Keep the faith.

I love my maxima to death... till death. It will rot in the back yard if there's ever a time that I need to fold and move on to another car; patiently waiting for it's time of revival. It's the ideal car for me right now, and even when it's not, I won't have the heart to get rid of it when the time comes; whenever that may be. I'll work something out to where I can slowly and meticulously restore the car from top to bottom with the help of trusted shops and whatever time I have available to work on it. A lot of people see getting a new(er) car and using the maxima as a backup if anything goes wrong, a winter beater, but if I wanted a beater, I'd just buy a 35+mpg civic to tool around town in for next to nothing.
In my eyes, as strange as it may be, I think it would be awesome and ideal to have a pristine, rebuilt, tastefully modded 3rd gen that would "technically" be a "new" car- Garage kept and maintained with a slew of extra parts on hand so I could get another 16+ years out of it.

I could fix anything that was broken on the maxima if I wanted to.
But in the end, I couldn't fix the FWD thing. That and I've owned one since 1998'. I mean really, sometimes it's time to move on.
I'm happy with my replacement.

I have been ready to move for some time now, i just needed a little "push" to get me to finally let it go.. (the little accident in my driveway)
On a positive note, the wifey's maxima is going through some "changes" as of late.
She is really happy with upgrades i've installed on her car( warpspeed y-pipe/my stereo system/se mud flaps/wheels/poly suspension parts/etc.)

I'm going to keep the 3rd Gen as long as I can. I what a RWD for it. But for now I can afford to do that anytime soon. However my car goals also include a 2 door non FWD (Thus the stupid question I ask Greeny in his retired 94 thread) and a Ferrari. There is a strong will for it and I will find a way to buy a Ferrari.
To Greeny: I suspected that driveway incident push you to the edge and the tranny was the last straw. Will you, someday change your name to MyWifesGreeny? Or replace the trunk to an SE trunk?

I used to think this way, yet 9 years later i don't "feel" the same way about my ve as i once did, mostly due to the "fwd" thing as jeff said, it's nearly impossible to achieve balanced handling with a fwd iron blocked v6. yet with some simple bolt on suspension mods on a bmw, i can run "circles" around a 3rd gen in the handling department. The 3rd gen maxima is tops in the "reliability" category imo, but in the end, i just want have a better balanced car in the handling dept. I'm simple tired of fighting the fwd crutch these cars will always have.
, But I'd keep the third gen anyway just because I enjoy driving it, and it's probably the most reliable model car my family has ever owned, that means a lot to me right now since I don't have a whole lot of extra cash to throw around. Our GXE sat for about 5+ years in the yard before I decided to start repairing it and getting it back on the road, but still, it saved our *** so many times.
i guess i may be a little different in that when i see something about my maxima that is lacking... i just try to improve it. Im sure me having the tools and ability sways my thinking. Someday i am even going to try and tackle that FWD problem... But until i have time, it will have to stay an over powered Front driver. but dont worry nismax1994 your not the only one who feels that way about your car.. Mine will be around for a long long time.

Try to find it and restore it. Has some sentimental value for being my first car.
Yea, when is it time to call it quits. I've got about 1500 or more a year for the last 2 years in my 96. Plus I'm still paying for it. Should get it wrapped up this summer tho.
What's your replacement Mr Needing a caw? (is caw a car or cow?)

Just kidding.
