Question

I started with a 5th gen, I love it, been looking in the paper and found a 92 max for only $300 !! it says it needs tranny work , other then that no other info on condition, would it be worth investing money on this or is it a dieing breed, i want a reliable car for my gf. Please list anything i should look for before i decide. Thanks.

GXE: (VG)

When was the timing belt replaced? *good for about 60k each*
Exhaust Leaks? Exhaust Manifold studs broken?
How many dead window regulators?
Transmission will need to be completely rebuilt/replaced- they aren't very strong to begin with on VG cars so be careful on the next one you get if you decide to buy.
Power Steering fluid leak? Front Main Seal Oil Leak? ABS actuator leak? (If applicable)
Rust around rear bottom seat belt mounts? Rust on rocker panels? Etc.

SE (VE): All of the above other than that the transmissions are much better.
VTC clack?
