Auto hesitant to shift into second..

Don't know much about autos, but I have skimmed threads over the past years covering shifting issues and remembered that it can be a quick fix and the fault didn't lie in the transmission itself, so when buying this new auto VE, I wasn't too worried about the fact that the tranny doesn't like to shift from first to second as it should, also was planning on 5 speed swap which allowed me to brush it off even easier..

Anyway, If driving lightly, it shifts relatively normal, but under typical operation, it tends not to shift to second from first until you back off of, or tap the throttle. So, I did some searching and refreshed my memory about the causes of this issue. From what i've read, looks like it's either the TPS, inhibitor switch or drop resistor? Shifting manually from 1-2 does not help the situation. I disconnected the drop resistor and took it for a quick drive which didn't seem to make a difference, so I went ahead and plugged the connector back in after the drive.

Any auto gurus out there know what the likely solution may be? Would be appreciated, thanks

My car has the 1-2 laggggg too; it progressively got worse over time. However, under WOT acceleration with the drop resistor unplugged, it shifts as it should. I haven't exactly been easy on my auto (not at all) since I'm also doing the 5-spd swap, but seeing as though mine basically fixes itself with the drop resistor unplugged... I just assumed it was my Torque converter/clutch. I also noticed it's much more noticeable when the car is cold and the tranny fluid hasn't warmed up and/or circulated, so this confirmed my theory even more.

Though since your car isn't at all affected by the drop resistor, it is possible you just need your transmission flushed, and/or the fluid drained and replaced- with the car's relatively low miles, it would probably be good to do anyway for longevity purposes (if you're selling.)

My vg has that 1-2 lag also..Mostly when cold though, pretty much shifts out fine after warm up, but still there a little bit..

I would do a fluid swap first thing on it,and i do not recommend flushing an auto trans, regardless of miles..

Shifting manually from 1-2 does not help the situation.
As in not shifting immediately to 2nd at all irrespective of engine speed?

If you are in D can you manually select 2nd and will it engage properly then?

I will swap fluids although level looked ok when I bought it.

Nope, engine speed does not matter. For instance, yesterday I floored it getting on the freeway and it was bouncing off the limiter in first, I felt like a tool who doesn't know how to shift gears Manual shifts don't work.

Its time .................

for you start treating the old lady properly then.

Slow warm-ups - no "gassing it" even when properly warmed-up - stay under 4000rpm if possible - no towing of anything - ATF drain/fill every about 3000 miles I would say .............

In general - act like you are a 90 year old guy driving her and she may give you quite a few more miles ..................... for if you continue to treat her rough she will expire sooner rather than later

yep, its common. mine does it too. in winter she lags the 1st-2nd shift even after a 10-15 minute warmup. i keep her in power mode always though so lightening up on the pedal towards the end of the shift usually helps

Why have you got more than one thread on the same topic then? ..................... and why no link if you say (as I think you are) that there is more detail elsewhere - I really couldn't be bothered to search and keep track of your life allover the show just to stop me from possibly making now obsolete comments.

i think he means that he's not planning on keeping the car anyhow, thus cares not if the car lasts 'years and years to come'. unless he changed his mind again.

This forum is getting cranky.

1. Drain tranny fluid as much as you can
2. Fill back up however much you took out
3. drive around
4. drain it again
5. fill it back up
6. drive it.
7. one more time?

Profit?
