Adding new switches

I'm adding lights under the dash and under the seats, it will be hooked up with two swtiches (on for under the dash, and the other for the seat lights)

Anyway, I started looking for places to mount the switches. Well there isn't a bunch of places I can put them.

There is the blank spot where the fog lights would be, but it's not a convenient place to put them.

I'm thinking of taking the money holder out and machining a bracket to add my two switches there. (where you put your money in beside the A/T switch. which doesn't work anyway since they fly out when you hit a bump.)

I just wanted to know where you guys added your aftermarket switches. or any tips you may have. I'd like photos to give me a visual idea if possible too.

thanks.

the switches kinda looks like this. to give you an idea.

There are plenty of places, you just need to use the imagination

If you can sacrifice the coin tray, popping it out and modifying that is probably the easiest solution. I wouldn't use chrome toggle switches though, they are kind of unsightly imo.

black rockers IMO. or whatever matches your interior. to make it look stock, and non-jackworthy.

lol@toggles! makes it look like you have hydraulics!

(ahem...)

anyway, why on earth would you want to use toggle (or any other switch) to light these things up? imo, the only reason you would want these lights is to be able to see when you are getting in/out of the car, to suppliment the door/dome lights.
pretty simple solution: tap into one of the door lights, and using a relay, light up the under-seat/dash lights. MUCH more custom looking than throwing a few tacky switches (regardless of the style of switch, unless you have an airplane cockpit with gauges and switches everywhere, they make the interior look horrible.)

Different J30s have different stock switch locations (depending on year, trim, region, etc).

In the owner's manual, it shows the sunroof open/close switch to be on either side of where the hand-brake comes out of the center console, but in mine, the switches are up high between the map lights (factory switches).

Have a look through your owner's manual for idea's on where you can put switches that will fit and look to suit your car, then hit up a wrecker or dealeship for the switch and do some wiring.

@ BenStoked:
I'm putting blue neons, not regular lights. I don't want them to light up when I open the door, and don't want them on all the time either thus the switches.

I bought those switches because I like the look of them, my preference. And I don't think they look "too much" out of place. sure they don't look stock, but aren't too bad either.

I made the bracket today and installed it, haven't painted it yet or nothing. I just tested if it fitted good. And I like the look of it.

Car is dirty...

Not bad, I think it looks a little funny with only 2 switches, but theres really no need for 2 or 3 more.

I probably would have hid them away under the dash or on the kick panel where the switch for my alarm was.

I believe if you're going to add switches then you want them to blend into their surroundings... the less noticeable your car is the less likely someone will try and break into the thing...

First pic shouldn't be noticeable at all....

Second pic much more pronounce once it's pointed out, but still not an eyesore....

i don't really care what your switches look like as long as you like them. but i def. think you're on the right track for mounting them where you are. but that doesn't mean i agree w/ having neon lights for your feet? ps i hope you are painting black...

I appreciate the bump The function of this particular switch is of course a bypass for the parking brake ground line for the Alpine IVA-100 (so as to have video go while the parking brake is not engaged, quite common when it comes to having screens in your car)

as long as the passenger is watching it and not the driver, i don't see it as being a bad thing.. but for something people install themselves, they can easily just ground that instead of hooking it to the handbrake switch anyhow.

I think, in NY at least, you can't have an active video screen in the eyesight of the driver. So still illegal if just a passenger is watching, but safe.

Correct. Illegal in TX as well. The idea of the switch though is if you are pulled over for any other reason and you are watching something all you have to do is hit the switch and the head unit will display "Parking Brake must be engaged" or something to the effect alluding to the fact that the car should be parked to view (which you cannot achieve by just having a constant ground... sorry Caped). It's great for long road trips with friends or family... kick on a movie or two and time flies... though I'm not advocating that it's a good idea for the driver to be watching it at any point in time it's a nifty mod for the application...

well i don't have much desire for ICE, or break road laws all too much; i was just tossing it out as an idea of what could be done.
