4 mounts. 2 on trans, 2 on engine block.

what are you replacing gaskets for? intake leaks? exhaust leaks (related to 3rd paragraph)? oil/coolant leaks? *****-n-giggles?

the exhaust thing COULD also be broken studs. and if it's rusted in place a broken stud COULD appear to be intact but in fact only be holding on by the rust. i had this happen in 2007 when removing my front exhaust manifold... one of them was already broken but the rust was just holding it in place.

  • Well I know for a fact that oil is coming from somewhere because the valve covers are dang near black. and when i clean them off a bit it goes right back to the samething so im guessing VCG(valve cover gaskets) need to be replaced there.
  • Since Last year whe ni got the car and it was cold I figured I had an exhaust leak... So i figure why not just go ahead and replace most of the gaskets to be on tha safe side.
  • I also have been loosing coolant but to where i really dont know i did see something dripping from the side where the water pump is but im like it cant be the pump if i just replaced it. u guys told me to get a thermostat and see if that fixes that problem im getting that this week.

doublecheck everything on that side near the water pump.. you might have to take the belts off to get a better view and everything. How new are the hoses on that side? also have you doublechecked the hose clamps? I was leaking coolant due to a loose hose clamp when i drove from raleigh (50*F) to Greeny's house in TN (~15*F). It was plenty tight when it was hot out, but apparently not in the cold.

that howling is unsettling. is it maybe coming from one of your a/c pulleys? remove that belt and see if the howling still occurs.

and also does the knocking sound EVER go away? does adding oil help (oil level)? does adding oil not help but CHANGING the oil does (oil and filter cleanliness/lack of contamination)?

I will check on that belt but that noise started a few weeks ago i just heard it a few nights ago before leaving work.

and that knocking sound does come often right now its time for an oil change i bought a K&N oil fliter yesterday im suppose to be getting my oil changed 2marrow. sometimes when the car is real hot u hear nothing and it runs smooth. but when its kinda kool out i get problems.

i see. like mine right now clacks like a **** on startup but then shuts up... but then toward oilchange time it clacks the whole time i'm driving. Even i myself am not sure if my problem is oil level or oil cleanliness tho.

That exhaust leak sounds exactly like mine. You can find where it is by spraying water with dishwasher soap on the flange, and bubbles will blow where the air is coming out. There's probably no point though since the exhaust manifold gaskets will need to be replaced, surfaces checked for distortion, which means engine removal.

If your going to the trouble to fix the manifolds leak - just overhaul the engine in my opinion (depending on the mileage of course though) if after inspections it needs overhaul, that's what I ended up doing. It's so much work to remove it, that I want to avoid doing it anytime soon again.

Caped is right on the studs and nuts looking like they are intact but they are in fact brittle and fall right out. Most of the studs and nuts just fell right off when I put the socket on them, and I hit them lightly with a chisel on the side at first to work the penetrant, and they just moved. Only about half of the studs in total were intact in mine for both front and rear. There was very little clamping force left on those flanges.

Im to the point right now where i just want to get it to run real smooth old car but with some TLC i think i can get her running 10x better... but the problem with the sounds i hear kill me.

Why don't you just overhaul the one you have now? Do you need it for work or something so you can't allow for the down time? It could take up to a month to overhaul - unless you get all the parts ahead of time, but then again you can't until you do the inspections.

Sure looks like your exhaust manifold is cracked... The exhaust leak your hearing could be coming from the manifold gaskets, the crush gaskets on the Y pipe, or the flex section of the Y pipe, but just based on the sound of it I would say manifold gaskets.

The howling sounds sound like a vacuum leak somewhere?

i don't think that's a crack... just a casting imperfection

and don't you see his missing exhaust stud on the right side? that's where the exhaust leak is coming from!

Yeah I saw the stud... hence the inclination towards the manifold... He could be experiencing a number of leaks though, that's why I mentioned the other areas... I know personally I was, and I ended up just replacing it all including all of the studs...

Are the manifolds casted aluminum?

You'll want to do all of them, and yes having busted studs can cause performance loss... Are they "hard" to replace? Well that will get you varying answers, and depends much on you and your skill set...

Read this thread... about replacement: http://forums.maxima.org/3rd-generat...-manifold.html
