Thinking of rebuilding caliper

I noticed i have been loosing brake fluid. When doing the struts I noticed one of the calipers was wet and grease all over it. I am guessing that the seal in the piston is leaking. I am on a budget. I have been driving this way for about a year now. I am doing new pads and rotors and found a rebuild kit with new ring, seal and dust cap for $3.00. Is it pretty straight foward? I figured it was worth $3.00 to see if I could fix it.

yes it is pretty straight forward from what i remember, but you will need looootttss of brake lube to get that piston back in

Trouble is the piston surface is most likely corroded so the moment you disassemble that thing it will leak event more, regaedless of the seal. I'd make sure you can buy a caliper quick if you find yourself unable to assemble it back at least to the current state. That 'dust cap' is actually very important as it supposed to prevent moisture to get to the piston surface. Usually that dust cap gets damaged -> piston rusted -> you notice a leak. My point is it is usually too late already when it leaks.

I haven't found the place who would sell me a piston without the rest of the caliper yet. This would be a great kit!

then you're in for alot more than you might have thought. rear calipers are uber-complicated internally, due to being both hydraulic (pedal) AND mechanical (e-brake)

Well, I didn't know that and managed to disassemble/assemble mine couple times already just fine. I wouldn't say they're too complicated.

Does anyone know where can I source new pistons? Mine are corroded and it's a matter of time they start leaking.
