Performance Air Filter??

When I bought my 93 vg max, it had a stock air box. I then changed it to a small cone filter and got rid of the stock air box. The guy at autozone told me I would loose gas mileage, and that the cone filter would make the car sound different vs a K & N Air filter. I like the sound of the car as it was with the stock air box and filter, I really only hear the difference when I rev the car above 2500rpms, basically I like the sound of the engine without the present cone filter, and am thinking about getting the K&N filter since it would'nt change the sound of the engine!

k&n does change the sound of the engine, or more correctly, the intake.haven't you ever seen a k&n commercial?

nah I havent seen the commercial, but the K&N filter would fit right inside the stock air box housing.

I installed the K&N on my VG30e and yes it does change the sound of the motor, slightly. You can hear more air going through but you dont get that cowl suction sound that short rams get.
But I also took the intake plenum out and there is a section (the resonator) that goes through a hole in the engine bay and it dips to a little bit in front of the fender. I cut the bottom of it so its sort of like a cold air intake, and then closed off where the plenum takes in air behind the headlight. It sounds much more agressive with this and is actually smoother.

yea same on mine. i like having the extra bit of noise.. makes it easy to shift on sound alone, rather that having to look at the gauges. my brother's 6th gen has a stock airbox and is SO quiet i have a hard time hearing the RPM of the engine while shifting.
