VLSD QUESTION

Came across a good deal on a VLSD 5-spd tranny. I was looking for a non VLSD, But if this can go together with ease then I'll jump on it. Question would be..does this involve any mods( axle sizes, mounts, bolt up issues) that need to be address before I spend money on this tranny...cause my tranny sounds like I have a supercharger( bearings are whining) Thanks for your help

are you 5-speed, already?
if so, you will need axles, and hubs (or complete ve-5 knuckles and axles, or custom axles made).
are you auto? well, there are a couple of really good write ups, links in the stickies.

afaik, yeah. I believe the trans mounts are different, but the carrier bracket is the same (again, afaik).
capedcadaver, or another member should pop in, and verify. I have yet to do it, but it's high on the list (just a few notches under installing the radiator, and poly front control arm bushings, hopefully both this weekend...)

to swap from nonLSD 5spd to VLSD 5spd the ONLY thing you need besides the tranny itself is VE axles and hubs. Tranny mounts and stuff are the same for all 5spd 3rd gens.

You can do this a few ways...

take the VE axles and have an axle shop swap the outer joints from your VG axles onto the VE shaft and repack the boot and use your stock VG5 hubs

OR

just get a bare VE hub and have it pressed into your VG knuckle w/ new bearings and use unmodified VE5 axles

OR

swap the whole knuckle/hub assembly from a VE (doesn't matter if it's a/t or m/t) and use unmodified VE5 axles

I went by and checked the setup..looked straight until a crack appeared at the L. inner axle going into the tranny and leaking... finding and seeing that the vehicle was in a major wreck.. shucks!...plan B..got a non VLSD to pick up with 86,000 for $200(all who you know)..starting tomoro noon...pulling the old one out, which is screaming so bad my daughters tells me "your car is crying"..I say a transplant is a transplant..a mod is a mod..this my friends is a transplant! We do this for the luv!

Well completed the transplant, and I must say, a tranny that has 86,000 is rare...its tight, and feels like I went back in time! Why can't all trannies be this easy to install..No noise or gear slack..figured while I'm there replace main seal..and flywheel/clutch..biggups to McKee auto parts in Middleburg FL. had good parts..I'm looking for front and rear trans mount? Any help?

I will have two extra soon, but they are used and I don't know if you want them that way. Otherwise, rockauto.com or ebay all the way. Or you could try the liquid polyurethane restoration trick.

Caped pretty much covered it. And to clarify, all M/T carrier brackets are the same.

Already installed a non VLSD tranny with very low miles...remember I did a transplant and not a mod.
