Planning a VE restoration
Planning a VE restoration
As some of you may know, I still have my VE. The VE that I drag raced with nitrous and got into the 13.5's. Since then I have sold off most of the mods in hopes of selling the car since I also have a WRX. Unfortunately no one has taken the bait on buying the car and it has been sitting for almost a year. While it has been sitting the car has incurred many scratches and tree sap stains.
Summer is only a few months away and I am tired of seeing the car sit. I see this car as an opportunity to learn, since the car will not sell right now I can learn how to do body repairs, and paint a complete car. I am planning on doing the following:
-sanding the paint down
-fixing the dents
-repainting the car
-lowering the rear of the car
-putting the back seats back in along with the seat belts
-getting a new rear spoiler (might try and find something non maxima that still looks good, any suggestions?)
-fixing the broken window motors
-possibly getting new wheels if the budget allows
This thread will be a documentation of the planning and progress of the work. I am also looking for suggestions and tips with body work and painting since the biggest thing i have painted is a bumper skin.
Cheers,
Alex

I can't offer anything worhtwhile about the paint. I will try a bit with the spoiler.
a while back, somebody used an Infinity spoiler that looked absolutely stock when he was done. and sick.
then there's the wingswest and stillen wings (good luck with those).
or you could fill the holes, if you have a spoiler. won't be much more work than making new ones, and patching the old. also looks good, imo.

Well thats good to know! Keep us informed, I would love to know the basics of how to paint a car. I just got a paint job last year in Febuary, But when the tranny blew in October of last year, and me having a hard time finding a tranny. My car sat for almost 6 months and incured scratches and such so im thinking about getting another paint job but I dont know. Good luck on your restore though.
The set of 4th gen SE wheels and tires that are on my car are for sale. I was thinking $475. The tires are probably 75 percent or so. Garaged since I bought them.
Mounted, balanced, properly rotated. IIRC, one wheel has a little bit of curb rash from previous owner. The tires are from Les Schwab.

I will do write up for several of the processes and try and add pics if I remember during that day of work.

It's nice to see that you're keeping the car (for a while at least). Good luck with it. I kinda wish you still had your nos and drag stuff. I'm going to be at pacific raceways a lot this season...
but this is the one I am talking about (i think), on an M45
(found by googling m45 wing)

new wheels
James has an Infiniti spoiler from an older Q45 IIRC. It does look sweet.
I am pretty sure I did a basics of painting that's in the stickies. I may be wrong because it was years ago.
I would suggest a couple of sights though...
one is paintucation.com
Kevin has great videos and the forums are very helpful. Just read the wealth of info there and search for answers. Thats how I learned...well that and talking to a friend that does it for a living. There are other sites as well but will have to look them up on my computer. Its actually been at least a year since I have been to any of them but I am sure they are just as helpful.
Good luck. The one thing about painting is its not a cheap hobby. You will find it costs a LOT of money just to do one car (to do it right that is). Then you will appreciate how much a good paint job costs.
EDIT yep it was in the stickies. I dont know if the links are still active for the sites I listed there but check the thread out and the links.

I vote for #3.. of course I'm partial to that design
the rest of the wheels look like the kind of wheels you see on Civics. I have some wheels that look alot like #2 on my Civic

If you are on a budget, you might want to look for some other Nissan/infiniti wheels, 17 or 18. Except for Rays (350z track) OEM wheels are heavy, but much more durable than most aftermarket ones.
If you scan CL for a while, you can pick up a set of wheels for $200-$400 (even less if you are really lucky) depending on what they are.
If you need any other stock parts, check the FS thread. I have a parts car and stuff will be cheap.
Those first ones would look nice, of the ones you picked.

Should be picking up some used window motors from cliff calvin this weekend as well as some stock SE wheels to get me around until I buy a new set of wheels.
Let the madness begin!

On a side note. I'm going to run my maxima at pacific raceways today.
In regards to the infiniti spoiler, 2Legal4me modified a q45t spoiler to fit the max and it looked absolutely bad ***. I'm keepin an eye out for one and doing it to my 3rd gen

Good luck at the track, let me know how it goes

Yeah i thought i texted you about going down with you, no reply yet. If you are going down in the afternoon, I would be up for going with you to get my stuff. If you were going to head down in the morning, you think you could grab my stuff for me?
Good luck at the track, let me know how it goes

can I drive the subie? lol
Also, nice to meet you guys (Alex and Sean) in person.
Sorry, I didn't have more time to BS. My wife and son were in the truck and it doesn't even have a working radio. haha
Hopefully, some people get on the new local site and we can have a decent meet maybe this summer or early fall.

Ok so here is the progress from tonight:
9pm: Garage is a f**king mess, can't find JB weld...
9:15pm: Found JB weld, this night might actually be productive
9:20: Washing the wheels clean of brake dust and grime
http://www.flickr.com/photos/pdemarnephoto/4620560039/
9:35: Wheels are clean, time to sand out some massive curb rash (damn jeffy haha) and get these ready for the JB weld!
http://www.flickr.com/photos/pdemarnephoto/4620559967/
10pm: wheels are ready for JB weld, Love line comes on the radio, things are about to get funny/interesting
10:30: I have finished putting the JB weld on one of the wheels, heard about some chick who wants to have sex all the time but her boyfriend doesn't want to put out. WTF
Off to watch Justified
http://www.flickr.com/photos/pdemarnephoto/4620560087/
11:30: Justified was meh but next week looks like it will be a good one. Time to do the remaining wheel that needs JB weld.
11:45: Finish spreading JB on the second wheel, and hear yet another girl whose bf isn't putting out as much as she wants
midnight: time to call it a night and let the JB harden before sanding it smooth. More updates to come.
