Running Rough VE
Running Rough VE
My buddies VE hasn't been running too good lately. It's hesitating on acceleration and feels like an injector went bad, but no "putt putt" from the muffler like my VG had. I pulled the coils to check for cracks and they checked out fine. Cleaned the maf, and new air filter. I also started checking the injectors, but could not get to the rear ones. I assume there is no way to check the rears?
And finally I saw some dirty oil residue deep in the spark plug hole, but haven't pulled the plugs. Is it possible the valve cover went a little bad, and fouled up the plugs? Could the plugs cause the engine to mis-fire like that if they were dirty? I only replaced them with OEM plugs like 20k miles ago.

You have to take the Upper IM off to access the rear injectors. It is probably one of them. I know what the problem is. I just can't remember at this time what it is. I can hear the putt putt sound and I fixed that on mine but can't remember what I did right now.

Ah! Mine did this right before she died. Turns out it was before I set the timing. <-- culprit
As soon as she would putt and almost die I would tap the gas and she would shoot to 2k rpms. Are you sure the throttle cables are adjusted right? Has your friend tried anything and not told you? Thats the problem with ppl who are entering the mechanic world. They dive in face 1st not knowing a 100% what they are doing and screw up. Later to find it embarrassing what they did they don't admit to it. But the screw up always tells the story.

Before I would take out any injectors I would clean/tweek out all the connectors and harness connectors. Normally I check the timing first for hesitation reasons, then check coil/wires//plugs for proper spark and then fuel delivery systems. Could be something you might have missed and I'm sure you have already checked but I'm just saying.

Never did find the plug for the rear injectors, but luckily we found the problem. The spark plug in the middle cylinder at the front, was drenched in oil. What does this mean? Valve cover gasket? Anyway, cleaned them all up, started it up and shes firing on all 6 once again. Except as you accelerate sometimes, the power just completely cuts off. Similar to the shaking you get if your in second gear, and didn't give enough throttle so the clutch is trying to grab on and the whole car jerks. Feels almost like a tranny issue, but maybe not. Any ideas? Would a poorly adjusted throttle cable cause this? I was messin around with it and trying to make it tensioned by the "drum" how the FSM calls it, but could not get the throttle lever side to get tensioned.
Also, after we were done my friend popped out with a "V" and an "E", so we did what came natural
I don't think it came out too bad actually..

Of course I had nobody helping me fix it or showing me the ropes. I wasted money when I did not need to till I smartened up and found these forums.
if there's oil in the spark plug tube, you're gonna need to pull the valve covers and replace the spark plug tube seals. You can pick em up individually at the dealer for like 4 bucks each. The old ones you can pop out with a flat head screw driver and the new ones you just tap in lightly with a socket of similar diameter to the seal and a hammer. Might as well do valve cover gasket while you're in there...
stay away from felpro or any other aftermarket POS gasket if you don't feel like redoing the job.
How's the knock sensor?

I can really get the gaskets individually? Or just the tube gaskets can be bought seperate? Because I don't feel like ripping off the intake manifold to do the back gasket since it's not nessacery, and just interested in doing the front. Online I see they all come together

The link with the price was just for the gasket you can see in the diagram, I don't know if thats the one you need or not so if you're ordering, please be sure to look into it so I don't get blamed for purchasing the wrong part lol

I think he may be on to something here... dang VEs have to be so darn different! VQ30DE use tube seals while the VE apparently has it as one full gasket! Kind of convenient actually...

It's more of an inside joke thing between me and my friend rather then anything else. And also many Maxima enthusiasts will know what that means. Should probably put an italic red 5 there too hehe
