A/c question

Hey guys, I got a question. It seems that when I run my a/c, it will blow very cold for a few minutes, and then for about 15 seconds it will blow lukewarm air. After that 15 seconds, it starts blowing ice cold again. It does this continually. Could this be low refrigerant? I added a can of freon thinking that would solve the problem, but it hasn't. I also haven't check the pressure with a gauge yet. (I have to go buy one.) Could there be another problem??? BTW, this is a 1993 GXE. Thanks!!!!!

Check if the compressor turns off and on when this happens. If it does, the thermal control amp is signaling the compressor to turn off when the evaporator gets too cold when operating, which is normal. Must have been a very hot day if it was blowing lukewarm air within 15 seconds.

At what fan speed do you have it on? On my max, it would do this when I have it on 1 or 2, less often at 3 and rarely at all at 4.

It does this every time that I run the a/c. It's kinda like the freon is cycling through the system and every few minutes it blows air that is not freon (or cold). I usually keep the fan speed on 2. I've never heard of any other vehicles that do this. Is there something I can do to prevent this?

do you have enough freon in the system?
go by weight, not psi.
psi means diddly squat.
in order to check the freon levels on an AC system, you must vacuum the system, then add freon/oil as prescribed in the FSM. not a terribly difficult job, but the tools are expensive.

edit: AC should work on all speeds. make sure the fresh air vent is closed (lever on left pushed down), and the air recirculation switch is on.

Beg to differ - its the single most important parameter that the correct working of the system is dependent on - and in particular the suction pressure on the compressor.

No easy way out here - you need somebody with the proper pressure guages to determine what is wrong
