Money Pit?

My 1990se had been acting fine until this past weekend I was driving up 85 and I slowly lost my back speakers, then my headlights, then my speedo dropped to zero (but I was still moving at highway speeds), then my car studdered like it was running out of gas.

I replaced the serpintine belts, all 3 of them, becuase the felt too loose, but that only solved the problem for an hour, $400 later I still am facing the same problem. Does anyone have any idea what this is? Anyone go through the same thing?

Also, I am looking at the Sentra Spec-V, are there any boardes for it around here?

Thanks

i think the spec v is a nice sporty car for the money, people have been talking about it not living up to its hype though.

Don't Get a Sentra V-spec. It is not even close to being worth it. I'm sorry to say but it's a piece of crap ...right now, hopefully nissan will set things right in the next few years, it has the potential to be a badass car

$400 for WHAT?!
a new set of belts should cost $40, not $400!

uhhh, first things to check are your alternator and battery... sounds like your alternator is dead, and your car just ran off the battery until it died.

Hey, that sounds like a good diagnosis Matt! Makes sense since the electricals all slowly died one by one, then later the battery recovered enough to run another hour.

I've also run into a problem like this (on another car) where the car died while running so I thought it was the alternator. Turns out it was just the battery. Why is this, btw? I'd thought you could run the engine without the battery once you get it running...?

possibly the battery produced an internal short as the lead plates expanded and finally contacted each other. i've seen weird stuff like that before.
then of course the battery's got the short so it kills the power from the alternator- or otherwise something tells the alternator not to charge the system, so *puke* goes the car.

the SE-R's are sharp but id rather spend the 15-20k on a nice 92-94 VE 5 spd then the leftover $ for mods and such.

My Battery Too...

Yea BMAN my battery went bad last year too and I was thinking it was the alternator because of the symptons. These cars can use a lot of juice, if you have everything going it may have been just to much for the alternator and it needs a little from the battery to help out.....

Thanks for the help matt, and you were correct. It was the Alternator and another 250+ I'm back in business. It is running better than the day that I bought it so I think that it was just waiting to die till I had money saved up.
