on automatics its really easier to just get a new good tranny, stick shifts are good to rebuild but automatics a new tranny is better

or nows the time more than ever if you want a 5spd, get a VE5spd and convert

When rebuilding a transmission, it's difficult to know beforehand what will be needed until it is completely disassembled. For an automatic, you will need to buy the rebuild kit along with whatever else went bad (steel plates, drum, etc.) My dad worked on a 2nd gen Quest transmission (similar trans but with an open differential) and the splines on the rear planetary carrier got worn out. The labor itself, I wouldn't recommed it for a first timer without the right tools.

Unfortunately the only pic I took of that trans is the differential which I wanted to compare with the VLSD on the VE Maximas.

Have a look-see at the AT section of the FSM - start at page 196 to 238 ................. if the content there makes you come over all feint, then rather forget about it

You can get a JDM VE tranny on eBay for not much.. $200-400. If I was in need of a VE auto I'd probably just do that.

taking out a auto tranny isnt too bad if you have a hoist, otherwise it can suck lol. some cars you have to remove the full exhaust system to get the tranny out, RWD is alot easier lol

but yeah if you dont know tranny's well its best to get a pro to do it

I just had my auto rebuilt. Hella expensive. $2400+ My options where:

Buy a used tranny with or without warranty, ship it or go get it, have it put in by a friend. Could have done it for $1K probably. I would have had a old tranny with maybe some type of warranty but the warranty would have only covered the part, not the work. So if it went in a year I'd have to do it all over again. Whatever warranty if any would not have been much.

Buy and ship a remaned trans for $2600-$3500 with warranty and have it put in. I'd spend a **** load and only have warranty on the part.

Have a local chain rebuilt it professionally, do the flow checks and diagnostics, warranty the work and the parts for a year or 10k miles and most likely not have to do it again. If it goes, I take it back to them or a another company location and they fix it. I had no idea how bad it would be before they dropped it and opened it up. It could have been $1200-$2200. I had them rebuild it. Lower pump, one planetary, torque converter and as well as the standard rebuild stuff and kit.

It REALLY sucked writing that check but since I didn't have much in the car as it was a hand me down I was alright with it. It's been a good car so far and I love driving it.

I recommend either pulling one from a yard and paying not much to have it swapped if you don't think you'll have the car long or just bite the bullet and pay for a rebuild from a good chain.

i wouldnt pull one from a yard, most GXE there probably have blown trannies because the RF GXE tranny is so weak

for $1500ish you could have bought a VE 5spd tranny, and put new synchros, bearings, and seals in it

still auto's tend to sometimes crap out again after a rebuild, to stay automatic a low mileage tranny is better

improper rebuild of a 5spd and the transmission would crap out again too.
