TOB/ISB Noise - advise needed please
TOB/ISB Noise - advise needed please
Hey guys,
I read the thread talking about this topic and wanted to grab attention to perhaps get some advice quickly, and if it's worth anything, I won't delete the thread.
I have the dreaded noise coming from my TOB or ISB and I have a few interesting characteristics that may rule out the possibility of spending more money. I will be clear and concise.
1) the car has been sitting and has not been driven in several months after installing a used 5spd/clutch combo.
2)Never had the noise until now after starting it up while it is cold. It wasn't driven or operated while it has been cold thus far.
3) the TOB is a brand new Nissan part with maybe 25 miles on it, but it has been sitting for several months.
I am soon to have a good clutch to put in there and would like to be sure I do everything necessary before remounting the tranny. I read that oil will not make it to the ISB unless there is movement in the transmission, so I speculate that is why it may be making noise...
Should I worry about it, are there any easy test procedures, and shoudl I just replace the darn thing and call it a day?
Thanks guys, sorry to post unnecessarily, and this forum still kicks butt.

from my understanding if you are having transmission bearing problems it will make noise with the clutch is not being pushed. So if you push the clutch in and the noise goes away it's transmission bearings. If it does not make noise until the clutch is pushed in, but then goes away when it's released then it's the TOB. Again, I am not an authority on this but that is what I have heard over the years. I am sure others with more transmission experience will chime in. Good luck.
These quotes are from this page about a related topic. I shouldn't mix the two up, but I'm just looking for a fresh perspective since my car may have different symptoms from sitting so long.... I'm curious to hear from new members too.

This is what mine does. Only noise with foot off of pedal. The above information doesn't mention this...

Word.
And vernk posted this:
It was cold when I first noticed this condition and I let the car run for a few minutes. Do you guys think that was enough time to damage either the TOB or ISB?
I am uncertain as to which is the culprit and enjoy knowing as much as possible before diving into uncharted territory. I just might rebuild the whole thing if i begin to take it apart.
Thanks for the input!

I agree with James... check the TOB. I've had a couple cheap ones make a whirring noise when the clutch is let out, most noticably in neutral at idle.
James92SE:
Exactly.. it doesn't/wouldn't rattle/whir when it's engaged because it's pushed up against the pressure plate.
It (potentially) rattles/whirs when it's NOT engaged because it's not pressed up against anything to keep it quiet

the IPS is not under oil while not moving, it relies on the movement of the gears to bring oil to it so if you start it and just let it sit running with the clutch engaged it will just sit there and run dry, so a idea would be to drive it, then listen to it (be sure not to let it sit and idle very long). Another note: if it sounds the same when cold starting and after it has been driven there is a chance that the oil pick ups have been bent or damaged (not getting oil to the bearing)

I was just about to post in this but it looks like I've already been quoted from a previous thread.
Anyway, as I already said, I've had cheap TOBs make this noise. I know the conventional wisdom is that if it makes the noise with the clutch pedal out that it's the ISB, but the noises mine were making went away completely with a new/higher quality TOB. It sounds weird and is hard to quantify, but the spinning/whirring noise sounded exactly like when you have an old TOB in your hand and spin it - so I was even more convinced it was the TOB. Of course then when I pulled it it was quite obvious the TOB was all loose and rattling once I got it out.
I also get the same noise occasionally now in my blue VE. But I know for a fact it's not the ISB because the transmission was completely rebuilt and I have a cheap generic $80 clutch kit in it.
However, having said all that, the fact that you have a brand new OEM TOB kind of throws a monkey wrench in it. I wouldn't expect an OEM one to become loose/noisy/rattley like that

Is there anything else that's easy and relatively inexpensive to replace that should be replaced once the transmission is cracked open?
