90 SE Sonar Suspension
90 SE Sonar Suspension
I need help on my my Sonar Suspension control system as well as something else. On my 1990 Max SE, I have a set of controls in front of the autotrans shifter. I know for sure what one set is, Sonar Suspension Control. The other one is a switch type with Power And Comfort (ithas 3 settings, I think in between is normal).
The Sonar Suspension control:
How do I know for sure it works? I know that when it is in comfort and I am at a low speed (say under 45mph) I can actually tell the car is "floating" (but not violently or anything, but soft (I guess thats what the lighted "S" means when in this mode). There is an "N" when I go above 45mph on Comfort (2 buttons Comfort and Sport, 3 lighted letters I have seen, S (soft?) N(normal?) and F(firm?). In N mode the car seems to be a little firmer than soft but not too firm it still floats a bit. Now when I have the car in sport mode, above 45mph I notice that the car really firms up and doesnt float at all and in firm mode the lighted "F" is on. Below 45mph on sport shows the "N". Are there other signs I should notice about the suspension control unit? Should I be able to notice the car lower at all while I am driving?
Now, beside "Nissan's Sonar Suspension II" Control Unit is the 3 setting swithc I believe controls the transmission but I am not sure):
Like I said, 3 settings, Power on one end, in the middle has no label but I believe it is normal, and the other end is labeled Comfort. Is this transmission or something else? And I have really tested to see if I notice a difference in how the car operates.
Usually when I get into one of my street racing fits with a friend or stranger I switch the suspenion to sport and the other switch to power. Well, thanks anyone for your help!

So you've got two sets of switches right?
The sonar suspension doesn't do anything to the springs or ride height and just adjusts the shock valving.
The other switch IS for the transmission and controls how it shifts. In power mode it should downshift sooner and hold gears longer when accelerating. It won't make any difference in pedal to the metal racing though.
There should be a FAQ or sticky somewhere for this, if not then on someone's page. Try looking around for it.

Sonar Suspension
Mine has 3 letters S (soft) M (Medium) H (Hard). As already stated it oly adjust the valving rate in the shock. Also, it adjust the feedback rate on the power steering. In "Comfort" mode you should feel a less direct feedback (greater power assistance) and in "Sport" you should have a more direct response.
