Engine swap?

I did a search and didn't find anything on this.
Can the 255HP VQ engine & tranny from a 2002 Maxima be swapped into a 3rd gen? If so, is it 100% bolt-on using off-the-shelf parts?

I'm just curious mainly. I don't have a Maxima (yet) but if I were to get one, it'd be a 3rd gen as I liked those the best.

I don't know for sure. But I do know that it will not be a direct bolt on. I doubt it is even easy to do it at all, or someone would have probaly done it.

i thought it was 265hp, and either way, it's 3.5l right? so i think that would make it harder than it's worth to do the swap...

One word... WHY?!?

For the price you would pay for an engine and drivetrain, ecu, wiring harness, blah, blah, blah, etc, etc and for installation and a lot of custom fabrication, you could have a brand new Max. I am not convinced this swap is really even possible.

I can do it for anyone. Just tell me where you are at. And leave me your car, the motor, and $5k. Come back in 1 month.

Well, honestly I am not a huge fan of the 2002 Maxima's styling. I've always liked the 3rd gen. I could afford to buy a 2002 if I wanted, but if I were going to drop $25k+ on a brand new car I'd probably get something different. Also I am a DIY'er and have researched/assisted on many engine swaps, although this was on FWD domestics where engine mount locations are usually the same for numerous engines.

Well. If you get a 92-94 SE 5 Speed. Spend about $2k in bolt ons. You will be running about the same as a stock 2K2.

Then the 3rd gen. gets waxed. Or is forced to get a custom turbo or NOOOOOOSSSS. Then the 2k2 gets Nos or S/C and there is no comp. I guess DA-MAX just showed us a lesson. 2k2's kick ****.

Yep, that's why I might get one someday when they're cheaper. Not to mean it's ever going to replace my 3rd Gen though!

I think 5-6 years down the road. The 2k2 6 speed will be about as rare as a VE 5 speed. If not more...

I'm currently doing an engine swap. I'm getting a 93 VE put in my 90 Max. Hope it works. Although it's not a 2k2 engine, it'll be fine for schooling the people I race! Damn..2k2 engine in a 3rd gen would be sweet. Best body with best engine...nice!

Won't fit. Do a search.

VG30E-T will tho. It's simple, 5 hours max.

Jeez... it only took two Mechanics HALF a day to pull my VG30E out. I guess they weren't experienced enough to do a swap in less than 5 hours..

You'd probably need a Z32 body frame to mount the engine. If you can fit a Z32 NA motor into a 3rd gen, then you could fit a Z32 TT motor in a 3rd gen as well.. but that's not the case. The Z32 both NA & TT are way too wide (if mounted transverse for FWD application).

Has anyone done the VG30E-T swap?

If it's really good, I may be tempted to save some money and get an early model 3rd gen 5spd (VG not VE) and then just swap it with the VG turbo. How good is that engine? I haven't heard much about it. How much are we talkin wit the engine and the installation combined?

I am almost positive that there has been a post about this topic. I know because I posted a lot about it. In a nutshell, the VG30ET is the same design as the VG30E in the 3rd gens. The VG30ET has a horsepower output of around 205 (depending on what year Z31 VG30ET motor). The swap isn't easy. If you haven't already pulled your own motor or know someone that has experience with swapping Nissan motors then you have a problem. Your talking about $2500 for the VG30ET motor (this really depends on the condition.. year.. mileage.. etc.), plus your talking about atleast $2000 to pay someone to do the swap. This all for a STOCK VG30ET. If you want to upgrade some the parts, then plan on spending a lot more.

Sorry for not replying for awhile...Been really busy the last few days. I'm having it done at Mac's Salvage in Urbana, Illinios. The engine is from a wrecked 93. I finally got it back today, and it is superb! 0-100 in no time! An eclipse tried to pass me on the highway, and the Max said NO! Not sure what type of eclipse, but the important thing is that I destroyed it!

What were these guys, first year shop students or something? I would have been done with 3 turbo swaps by the time they had the engine out!!!

What is the matter with you? Why did you bring back this OLD THREAD!?! Just so you can say "today a rice driver tried to cheat on a race, he tried to get a rolling start, they really are slow" That post wasn't worth bringing back a thread back in January!
