Why?

My maxima gets awful gas mileage. The needle goes on E at around 240 miles on my trip meter. I can't possibly be getting this bad of milage can I ? How can I fix it?

I'm hoping my gauge is just off.

Mine 1st one got around that due to my slipping transmission.
The thing is, when it's on E, how many gallons you put in to get it to F.
Take you mileage and divide it by the gal amount = mpg.
I think we have an 18.5 tank but as long as it doesn't use up more than 12 gallons...

Update: days ago when I filled up when it was on "E", the pump had stopped at something like 12.017 gallons. I knew these cars had something like an 18 gallon tank. So I'm assuming I've got 6 gallons left. My gauge must really be off.

3rd gen tanks are about 15 gallons. If you're just puttsing around town, these cars only get about 18-19 mpg. However, they should get 26-27 max on the interstate not climbing big hills or high headwinds. I've had a 90 and still have my 94 GXE and the mpg's were the same for both cars.
If you're only doing short trips where the engine doesn't run at normal temp, then your mileage will suffer. Funny, my 06 Max SE gets about the same mileage as my 94 GXE.

So far as I know we've got 18.5gal tanks. With that said, generally at empty I've got 2 or 3 gallons left, so I've never actually put more than 14 or 15 gallons in. Hell, I don't even know if the fuel light works. Ha

I believe our cars are 19/26 city/highway.
20mpg is not good combined because previous car does about 23 mpg on a good interval but 19/20 when I'm doing city and hard acceleration.

Depending on you driving habits, it could be time the Maxima Vets to answer your mpg problems.

You need to calculate your actual MPG, not just guess by how many miles. Fill it up and reset your trip meter. Then drive it until you are at least below a half. Fill it again and divide the miles by number of gallons it takes to fill it up.

If you are mostly driving around town, 18-20 mpg is probably about average. On the highway it should be in the upper 20s. This will always depend on your driving habits.

IIRC from my old owner's manual, these cars have an 18.5 gallon tank.

If you do some modifications, some will help mpg and some will hurt mpg. Having bigger (heavier) wheels and wider tires than stock will hurt your mpg. Adding a lot of weight (big stereo systems) can hurt mpg. Y-pipe, intake, exhaust, UDP can increase mpg, especially if you drive easy.

So you have driven at least 280 miles, right?

Last year I ran out of gas in my car on the freeway between and onramp and a lane because the gas light never came on. Lucky I within walking distance of the station.

Look at what?

$42? Try filling up a 2500HD 4x4 with a 6L V8. I think it has a 26 gallon tank.

Just drive it to at least half a tank, then fill it again. Divide the miles by the gallons. You will have your answer.

FWIW, I have gotten over 450 miles on a tank with my old VE before.
