LSD Retrofit for an 89-91 SE
LSD Retrofit for an 89-91 SE
Wanted to test the waters for anyone having performed a VE (92+) to VG (89-91) SE LSD conversion? I am interested in this due to a recent decision to perform a VG turbo conversion for my 91 SE and believe that in order for the car to be manageable (as well as a lot more fun) would like to inquire as to whether this would be a drop in affair or if it would require moderate to heavy fabrication for correct fitment (upgraded axles etc...)? Although I'm relatively new to the ORG and Maxima's I've spent the better part of the last 8 years wrenching on my own as well several friend's Sport Compacts as well as a few Muscle Cars before that so I can find my way around a garage proficiently enough. Anyway.....After searching maxima.org and finding nothing about this conversion (although I have made a mistake once before...but that was several years ago
) I tried looking at a couple Z31 sites to see what they offered (of course the Z's RWD) and I found drop-in conversions for the N/A Z that are available from Nismo. Any insight into this issue would be appreciated......

LSD
First of all the LSD unit you inquire about isn't all that. Sure it will help, but it's something like a 20% LSD unit. If you were to do it I'd bet it would take at least a change of axles and the differential, if you're unlucky maybe the whole damn tranny. I don't think anyone has ever done this before but it would be nice to get something like this if you go turbo. You might have more luck and better results getting a company like Quaife make you a badass LSD unit that would fit the VG. I know they make an aftermarket one for the 4th gens. Then again the question of "why would we make those if our market is poor young 3rd gen VG owners"
It'd be tough but maybe something can be done here. good luck

Thanks for the info guys.......
Dude, I have your solution. I am in the process of building a *****-out 89 SE 5spd maxima. This is a situation I have been working on for a few weeks ( researchresearchresearch) I hate to give away my sources, but Pro-Tech transmissions (Maryland I think) can do this, for a reasonable price I might add. Check it out. I have some e-mails I can forward.
Good Luck, race you in the future

He asked the question, I gave him an answer... I didn't think he was looking for Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds
I don't think a VE lsd will fit into a VG-5sp case. The VE case has a "buldge" where the viscous coupling fits and the VG case does not. I've compared both transmissions as I've had to clutch jobs on VG-5sp and VE-5sps.
I would be better just to swap the whole VE-5sp into a VG max. From what I see the are identical in the important areas. ie.. bellhousing bolt pattern, tranny mounts etc...

So, in your experience, a ve trans should swap easily into a third gen with a vg motor? In that case, putting a ve trans in with a Quaife diff would be the best way to do things. What do you say?

I'd like to know though.

Yup. Just swapping the whole tranny would be easier. Either use the ve axles or vg axles(I think) I have no idea if the VQ Quaife would fit into the VE tranny. You had better figure that out before shelling out $1500 or so on a Quaife.
