Hello everyone

So, I bought my 1992 Maxima secondhand and it has a transmission that hasn't been serviced since the thing was made. One or more of the friction clutches has broken inside it, I got a rebuild kit but I know that it may not work after I rebuild it. I wanted to know what cars have a compatible transmission, seeing as how none of the junkyards around me have the right car and I dont have 2500 bucks to get a brand new one.

1990-92 Stanza will work ,if you have the base version Maxima 3.0 engine...rebuild your unit ,as it has a extra friction and steel in one of the packs (Stanza has 4 and Maxima has 5)...not to bad of a job to rebuild ....did you run the tranny diagnostic code checker to see if anything was recorded?

 

No I haven't. I dont have anything to read the codes with. I found the problem by draining the fluid and watching friction clutch flecks fall into my drain pan.

 

No tool needed to read codes, it's read by counting the flashes on the power/comfort switch.

Well, the help is appreciated. But I'm almost done with dropping the transmission. Just need to get the bell housing and torque converter off and I'll be rebuilding it. I'll definitely keep this in mind for next time it happens though. Thank you so much.

 

No problem, I made the same mistake by not accessing the codes prior to removal. I lived. Try to use the factory manual, I scanned the photos and enlarged them to make it easier to understand. My suggestion is when you get to the step when the gear gets pressed off the shaft ,is to take careful measurements and really good pixs up close ,so it can be pressed back in the same position (Very important unless you have access to the factory bridge tool)...other than that, it's pretty straight forward to follow the manual and get it done.
