Anyone know how similar the pinion gear is on the AT sensor compared to the 5 speed? It's a lot easier finding autos at the junkyard than it is 5 speeds, so would be nice to be able to grab one from an auto if it can be made to work with the 5 speed sensor. They're are discontinued, out of production, with no stock from Nissan, aftermarket speed sensors don't even come with them, and to top it off, 3rd gens are rare at the junkyard, much less 5 speeds.
I stripped mine somehow, after installing it a spare core trade-in I have, which I repaired several years ago, and had to install because of some reverse and first issues I was having with my original transmission. I cleaned up the mounting surface and dropped it in smoothly like every other time I've installed a speed sensor. But now it looks like a peeled potato after maybe 10 miles of driving. I didn't notice the speedo wasn't working until just prior to removing the sensor to inspect it.
The nylon ring that meshes with the sensor pinion does rotate 1/2 inch or so, whereas the one on my original transmission is fixed in place, which I never noticed, or I definitely would have swapped diff assemblies. Maybe the impact factor stripped the pinion. Can't see it being an alignment issue though and the sensor seems to rotate smoothly. Not the headache I wanted after finishing the job.
Just making a point that such a basic part is impossible to find new. Ring gear is worn on one edge, if I install another pinion, it probably won't mesh properly and strip out again. I'm going to do a full rebuild on the original transmission, then I'll worry about the speedo. Driving habits are pretty consistent, so not hard to calculate miles driven until then.
