Odometer Randomly Stops...

Hi

My trip odometer randomly stops counting, which then seems to hold up the total odometer. As nice as this may sound, it really doesn't. I need to know when to change the oil. The one thing I noticed about the problem is that it always happens on switching to a "9" in the tenth of a mile.

thanks in advance,
Joseph

Re: Odometer Randomly Stops...

i have a 90 se, and my trip odometer does the same thing. my regular odometer also stopped, which also caused the speedometer to go out too. it cost like $60 to fix some gear. but i dont know why the trip odometer does that.

The fix is to take the odo out and clean it... Happens a lot on Z's as well. Here's a link, its for Z's but you can apply the same info.

try pushing in the trip-ometer reset, keep repeating this.

i read on the other 3rd gen board that this can sometimes cause the odometer to stop working. one would think that if doing this can make it stop, maybe it can make it start again. dunno.

I have a '91SE and mine does the same damn thing. I just hit the trip odo button. Hasn't done it in a while though. Plus I noticed that my trip odo button is easier to push. Dunno.

Wow, is this happening to everyone??! I'm also experiencing this. I have noticed that the trip odometer stops at every 3.9 reading. So it stops at 3.9, 13.9, 23.9, 33.9 and SOMEhow kicks in and working again each time. I had my speedo replaced at the dealer (BAD IDEA) and grabbed my ankles on that one because my speedometer also doesn't work sometimes when I start the car, but I think I have traced this to a speed sensor problem.

Same problem here, although I didn't notice if it always stops on the 9. It'll go for a couple hundred miles, then stop for a couple hundred. One thing I did notice: when it is working, the odometer reads about 7%-8% high. Not sure if the speedometer reads high too, but I plan to check it this spring after trying the fix provided by Czar. Thanks!

Crap I was feeling great about my cars 122k miles, I got it this past month had the odometer checked and it has not been turned back but what if it was been stuck before. It works fine now, I guess it is just one more thing to worry about my 122k baby could be 222k for all i know. DAMM

Mine stops also, but i just think of it as a way to keep the miles down. I don't worry about it, i just chanege the oil every few months or so.
