More VTC questions

Ok, what exactly happens when the VTC goes bad? Is there a faulty part or something? Basically what I need to know is, if i build up a VE and put it performance cams, valves, spring, etc., etc. will the problem be fixed?

Need more info. Your question depends on the engine. I've got a VG30DE engine. The VTC sprockets fit on the front (passenger side) of the exhaust cams. My guess is, if you didn't have them, you'd certainly lose some (but not a lot) of performance, and possibly your valves would clatter, particularly at lower speeds.

If you're going to go to the trouble of rebuilding the heads and replacing the camshafts, you might as well rebuild/replace the VTC sprockets. They are pricey to replace, about $400 each I think. You can get rebuild kits for about $35 each but need a place to do the machine work. Check with your Nissan dealer first to be sure they have the right machining tools, otherwise you'll have the rebuild kits with no place to rebuild them.

Lastly, most important, be sure the Nissan technician is familiar with the rebuild procedure and has a copy of the service bulletin. The inner and outer components need to be exactly oriented the way they are now, so he needs to make some scribe lines before they're separated.

Good Luck

J

REbuild kits are hit/miss at most. This subject has been discussed at length before.

It would be on a VE30DE.

The VG30DE was available only in the TT300ZX. The VG30E (SOHC) is the only VG engine in the Maximas. I assume you have a VE30DE. You're right that they're about $400 each to replace... For parts. Most jobs end up being $1000-$1200 after labor. People generally say the VTC's cost 20hp and much of your low end torque since the solenoids keep the intake cams retarded at low engine speeds to benifit low-end power. The valvetrain (not sure specifically) makes a LOUD ticking noise. There's a post I think in the General Maxima Discussions forum a few days old written by someone who just replaced their VTC's. He said it made a world of difference.
