does a speed sensor affect idle?

My Speedometer and Odometer went out a week ago. From previous posts, it's probably my speed sensor. Does a bad speed sensor affect idling? 'cause about the same time my speedometer/odometer went out, when i get to a stop sign my rpm goes below 500, sputters, then jumps up to 700 rpm. Are they separate problems or are they related such that if I replace my speed sensor, it will fix my idle problem?

I would suspect they are most likely unrelated. If your sensor has packed up its bags and gone west then effectively you are getting a zero speed output which is an idle condition.

Brent.
