Manuals and Overhauls

Okay, I already have a Chilton's, and Haynes. Is it worth it to get a FSM? I am planning to buy a used VG engine and make it a project.

Tear it down, put everything aftermarket in it I can (Eagle Pistons, rods, JWT Cams, etc.) . Is this a waste? Is there something better I can do? I know a VE won't fit in my car, right? And I've heard people mention that Z31 thing, but people are diluting the search function with so much sarcasm, that it is hard to tell for a novice like myself (I am a mechanical engineer, and I put every mod list below on by myself, but I have never been inside the block.), to separate the people who are trying to help from those that are FOS.

I think the project will build character. And then maybe it will turn me into someone who rips people for asking these types of questions.

Any input anyone can offer would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Having the 5 spd makes it wortwhile.. if you had an auto, I'd say you're wasting your time..

But a modded VG can be made to put down some really good performance numbers with the correct parts and tuning.

I would highly suggest getting an FSM.. ESPECIALLY if you're going to swap the engine. it shows every wiring harness, wire for wire. that'll be essential if you're switching engines so that you get all the correct sensors hooked back up.

it's up to you if you think you have the skills to tear down and rebuild an engine.. it's not for the beginning DIY'er, I promise.
My dad was a mechanic for 20 years (60s and 70s) and rebuilt countless old american V8s.. owned his own drag car and did all the wrenching himself.. blah blah blah... It still took both of us 3 days and a FSM in order to rebuild my '88 mitsu engine, and it didn't have near the sensors or technology that was stuffed into my VG.. hook up a carb and a few vacuum lines, fuel and coolant and you were done.

VG is a whole new beast.

Thanks,

I'd probably pay for the swap after I was finished, since I don't have the heavy equipment required.
