VE Questions

Tired of VTC noises so I have one of two options
1. Swap the complete motor for another VE
2. Swap for a gen 4 motor(lighter, by about 100lbs and more torque)

Anyone have any ideas?
1993 SE, 166,600 miles.

I'm prepared to go the length to put in a stand alone ECU if the trans in the car will mate with the crank on the VQ. I just don't want to lose the factory LSD or the lightened flywheel.
Unless there are enough parts for internally modifying the VE,VQ will win.
HELP!!!!

Well, there you have it....the moderator has spoken...don't waste ya time with the swap, just shell out the $2000 and make sure the VTC's are done correctly!!

I am a really really new newbie...

I just got hold a 89 Maxima w/ 100K on it so I don't know a dam thing about Max's(dam is spelled that way purposely)

What is a VE? I have an idea that it is trim model, but not sure

What is the VTC? It sounds like a pretty expensive toy.

Welcome to the boards... I would suggest doing a search to read up on both of them, but the basics are:

VE refers to the VE30DE engine. DOHC 190hp engine that's in 94-94 SE Maximas.

VG refers to the VG30E engine that's in all other 89-94 Maximas.

VQ is in all 95 and newer Maximas. the 2002 has a 3.5L version of the same 3.0L that's been in all the others since 95.

VTC= Variable Timed Cams... it's a goodie that's on the VE30DE engine that advances the imtake cam timing at low RPM for more overlap- producing more torque down low. it's vaguely similar to VTEC on hondas.. it has the same effect while driving, (you get more power above about 4000rpm when the engine switches modes) but it's completely different technology and method.

Unfortunately, Nissan didn't design the VTC system very well and they are known to wear out and make ugly noises after about 60k miles. some people's cars run just fine with the noise.. I know of two that have had serious problems (break timing chain, cam sprocket falls apart, etc).

If you'll use the search function (there's a link in the top right corner of the page), you can find out TONS more info on these topics..

Why not swap in different heads with replaced VTCs? Its cheaper than a motor install.

and another difference is that we dont drive around with "VTC" stickers on our rear doors as do hondas with their "VTEC"

You could spend $3k+ trying to fit a VQ into your car for what? 15lb ft of torque and a 100 less lbs??? that should make you a whole lot faster  a healthy VE will give any VQ a run, ask Matt or Aaron or anyone with a modded healthy VE.

So my vote is option #3 FIX THE DAMN THINGS
