Sub Set up

I've been plannin out this set up for some subs and amps. (yes this is assuming that I get the money and i can still remember it ) Anyways, Some people have said that they sound better(can't think of a word) if they are positioned facing down. What positions do they work best?

Re: Sub Set up

yeah i heard that too. i was planning on putting 2 12's in, one on each side of the trunk, mounted so that they're in the back corners facing in on an angle, but towards the car. does that sound like it would sound good positioned like that...if you know what i'm saying?

It causes the sound to travel thru the body of the car, and I can see how it could work... Personally, I'd do this:

Cut an 8" hole in the center armrest and put an 8" sub there, and put 2 15"s in a box facing the back seat in a plexi-glass bass-box...
But that's just me

if you just want loud and not tiet bass then go with the 15's otherwise i would go with like 3 10's or 2 12's. it really comes down to what kind of misic you listen too. that also depends on what type of position you want to fire the subs. i think the best overall fire position is facing back towards the trunk.

Personally, I like the sound from a 15" better, especially the bass... They can hit lower, but hey, that's just me

you can fit a 12. i did it. it's great, you can actually hit the lows that the speaker says it will hit 18 hz on my 12 inch polk. I have pictures but my camera isn't working right now because i got mad at it because it wouldn't work and pulled the cable out of my computer ruining the cable. it was fun. i'll get my mom's camera and show you if you want to see it though.

Are you talking about the polk/momo mm120? If so, do you have it set up in a non-sealed enclosure?... just wondering how it sounds compared to it being sealed.

I'm an installer who has put many sub combos in my car and no matter what size sub or number of subs, the best position is to aim towards the rear of the car with the sub about a foot away from the trunk lid. I had the highest SPL readings that way and the sound is pretty clean. This is just my opinion but i suggest tryin it this way and then moving the enclosure around to where you like it best. If you do like it there I have one word of advise for you: DYNAMAT.

Actually, I'd like to see the pics, biggest I've heard fitting in there decently is an 8", but I'd love a 12" in there
I haven't actually done it, because I'm going to fix it up before I start modding it (6 hours into my heater core, and we still haven't gotten the damn thing out...)
But I fully intend on doing exactly what I said

Ok, I'll get the pictures around 3 today. You can't perfectly see the subwoofer. It's covered by that metal thing behind the seat and it is wide for the hole but it clears it fine and sounds great. I actually think i could put a 15 in there, maybe even and 18 if i got strong enough wood. You only have to watch out for the excursion.

does anyone know hoe the infinity perfect 12s sound? my polk plays good low bass, but when i want to turn it up the thing distorts really fast. i saw the infinity handles more power so was wondering if the thing will pound more.

Perfect 12s sound good but i have a suggestion: If the sound distorts at high volumes try making the enclosure for your sub a bit smaller. You can get the Perfect 12 and find out that it sounds just about the same as what you have now. Also try adding PolyFil if you havent already.

oh yeah. that's my preblem right there then. i'm doing the trunk mount so it's like 10 cubic feet of air space or something insane like that. is there any 12's would be able to pound a little louder in that kind of "enclosure"? Thanks.

the correct terminology is "Inverted" subs

I would consider it so. You could always just bolt a 1 or so cu. ft.(whatever the manufacurer recomends) box to the seat back and seal it up nice and tight.

yeah, but polk claims that speaker hits 18 hz, i know it will, but it is impossible, absolutly impossible for any speaker to hit that low of a range in a box smaller than 5 cu.ft. i don't understand why companies lie so much. i mean jeez, they can't even rate the wattage correct.
