I have a 93 maxima se, auto with analog speedo. The speedo is getting wacky. Changing between 20 over the real speed.I talked to the parts and service man at the local nissan didn't know if the speedo is mechanical or electric. Does anyone here know or if there an easy way for me to find out?

well i took the speedo off of my friends max and there was only wires going to it so im thinkin it would be electrical. I also took one off of a 1965 chevy and there is a small cable back there that rotates in sequence with the tranny. this is mecahnical obviously and the max doesnt have one. so.........

electric -- read on for proof
It's electric. Just try when you are driving on either an empty road, or better yet, a large parking lot. You go 20 or 25, whatever. Turn the ignition off (one click so steering remains, though without assist, speedo drops to zero instantly. Turn ignition back on, and the indicator is back alive.
Problem you have could also be the sensor that sends the driving signal to the speedo.
Good luck,
John
