Odd Ticking

OK FIRST PERSON TO SAY VTC GETS A BEAT DOWN

Alright I will try to describe this the best I can.... Today I was driving around for about an hour then pulled into a parking lot. I put the car (5 spd.) in neutral and set the E-brake. I then noticed a loud (maybe three-four ticks per second) Ticking. Normaly I would write this off as insignificant however the ticking would go away if I pushed down the clutch pedal. Any input?

I remember mtcookson or someone post that he was having this problem and it wound up being the "some bearings inside the casing that are bad" here is the link of his message...sorry I don't have a 5 speed so thats all the help I can be.

Lifters? Check your oil level. Mine tick when oil is low.

No I check the oil almost daily, I dont think the lifters would stop ticking when I push in the clutch pedal

Where is the sound coming from? My lifters are sticking, but you can obviously tell its coming right from the valve cover...Does the sound come from the tranny, or are you just assuming it is related because it stops when you push in the clutch?

Tranny Fluid?

Sorry, I missed the clutch pedal thing. I had an issue like this too though. Have you checked your gear oil? (Manual tranny fluid). I had a ticking sound like that except for when the clutch was in, then as more fluid went out, it became a loud clanking noise as opposed to a clicking noise.

A tranny shop tried to convince me that it was the throw-out bearing, but they failed to mention that there was no gear oil in it, and when I got it filled, it went away.

I think we have a winner....

Really though, this sounds exactly like what you are describing.

Hmm well not realy, the only thing simular is the fact that the noise only happens when in neutral.

And that the noise goes away with the clutch in. I would look into bearings, not much outside the transmission interacts with the clutch when in neutral. IMHO

As much as you don't want to hear it, but I don't think bad bearing in a tranny would make a clicking noise, bad bearing would be more like a grinding noise depending on clutch pedal position. Unless you don't change your oil regularly (which I know you do) and have excessively dirty oil which can reduce the oil supply to the lifters causing them to collapse I doubt it's the lifters. Trust me, when my VTC started clicking I was like WFT just like yourself. Before the clicking got worst I ran out and did a motor flush hoping this might help and it didn't. But as the weeks went by and the clicking started becoming more frequent I finally had to give in a accept the fact. Honestly it's not a pleasant sound when they are clicking constanly with a hot or cold engine. I drove about 10-12K before I finally gave in a did something about it, what a wonderful day that was

Sounds to me like its the input shaft bearings inside the transmission. I have overhauled a few hundred (I work for Nissan) and the bearings will rattle when its in neutral. Might wanna have it checked out.
