T28 or T3 depending on year. Either oil or oil/water cooled. Both made by Garrett I believe. www.Z31.com is your place.

T3 was pre '87, T28 was post '87
'85-89 are water/oil cooled
'84 is only oil cooled

and whats the difference between a t25 and 28?? I usually see them grouped together(ie- T25/28) so I'm guessing not much??

the t3 and t25/28 are different turbos, you would not be able to bolt a t25/28 onto a pre 87 manifold because they use different flanges... the t28 is just an upgraded t25.

to tell you the truth as of late I'm not too sure thats true....I'm looking at my actual 87T manifold and I'm looking at pic of a 85 manifold and they look relatively the same...now if you look at the dimensions of the "standard" T3 flange it is about 4.25" and the flange on my manifold is also 4.25"....and if I am correct I seriously doubt NIssan would make two different types of turbo exhaust housings for the same car, T3 and T25 denote the compressor side not the exhaust side...and one more thing if you look at the z31 fiche the exhasut maniflds for 84-89 are the same number so I highly you CAN pop either a T25/28 or T3 on ANY 84-89 Z manifold!

well then i guess you can, i havnt personally seen any so i was just going on the fact that the t25 and t3 use different exhaust housings and a t3 will not bolt up to a 2g dsm which use t2 flanges.... so i dunno

before this thread i thought that all z31's used t3 turbos but i guess not..

i talked to kaleb the other night, he was saying something like that 87+ z31 cars use T25 to reduce turbo lag (because of complaining customers) and 86 - z31 cars had T3 turbos the water cooled ones (some are T3)and some are T25 but all z31 manifolds are a T3 flange though.

here`s some pics of my exhaust maniolds
