5-sp. conversion
I'm thinking about doing this and was wondering if anyone ever actually did a write up? (Kaleb?) I have this link already:
http://www.css.tayloru.edu/~hheiner/...autoto5spd.htm
One of my main questions is whether or not the VE transmissions are compatible with the VG engines. I can get them for around the same price and if they fit, I wouldn't mind the LSD. So would I have to get the driveshafts from the VE too?
I dont have to worry about labor because my dad and his friends could do this for me so I could give them some money. I'm thinking that I'm looking at around 1500 in parts?
I'm just kinda throwing out ideas right now so if somebody could help me with my questions, I would appreciate it. I finally got a job so now I have cash flow and this is one thing that I would love to do because I'm getting sick of the auto, but I love my car. There isn't really much info on here about the conversion itself, just people talking about doing it. Thanks

supposedly the VE tranny will bolt right up to the VG block, but the axles will be the fun part.
You'll need axles for that specific tranny, as the VE came with and without LSD.
either one, the VE tranny has larger (diameter) axles, so you will have to switch out the axles to get them to fit in the tranny correctly..
then since the axles are larger, you'll also need new wheel hubs.. best thing to do here is to go to a junkyard and buy a complete spindle off a wrecked VE. they'll run you about $40-50 each. A new wheel hub alone from the dealer is around $110.
other than that, you'll have to talk to Kaleb about any intricacies involved.
according to him, the hardest part was mounting the hydraulics on the firewall for the clutch.

so basically, nobody is really sure whether or not they will fit?
Sounds like too much trouble just for a limited slip. I guess I'll just get a VG tranny. I'm gonna start pricing stuff out today so I could get some rough figures. I guess I'll just email Kaleb once I get some more info. Thanks for your help.

I hadn't thought of that. Actually, I went to the track a couple weeks ago and I was spinning like crazy off the line, but I only had the fronts dropped to 28 psi.I just dont want to buy all this VE tranny stuff, only to find out that it wouldn't fit properly or at all. So here is what I'm looking at in addition to everything else if I get a VE tranny(I'm getting some estimates from www.car-part.com:
VE tranny with 70,000 on it is 700.
axles from a car equipped with VE manual tranny( front and rear?)
I didn't know what to pick from the drop down menu. Also, would it be both the front and rear axles?
wheel hubs- what exactly are these?(would I just be replacing the front ones? I found some for 40$
what else would be need in the conversion that would be VE specific?
I had all this figured out until I thought of the VE tranny
As I said, I would love to have LSD but if it's gonna be a lot of trouble then I dont want to have to bother with it.
Thanks for your help and listening to me rant. Keep in mind, I'm not going to be doing the labor on this
I just want to get everything worked out to where all my dad has to do is the labor. And yes, he is able to do stuff like this. Thanks again.

(which also makes me think the VE tranny will bolt right up to the VG.).. I believe it's the REF404V or whatever the non-las tranny is.. when my box blew up last month, they told me it was not the LSD, which I know for a fact it was. (i.e. I've done the testing on it and seen the LSD unit inside the tranny so I know it was an LSD box)
but anyway, you could get them with and without the LSD.
KLoWnPR109, you will need:
VE tranny
clutch kit
flywheel (for a VG. VE has 8 bolt holes, VG only has 6)
axles to fit that specific transmission (5 spd with or without LSD. usually you can just get them from the same car and be sure they'll fit) you only need the fronts. the rear suspension has nothing to do with the swap.
transmission mounts- I believe those are different. confirm with Kaleb.
clutch/brake pedal assembly
master and slave cylinders and all hydraulics involved.
front wheel hubs. your best bet is to just buy the entire front spindle. if you buy the hub only, you have to replace the wheel bearings for $40 each. (in order to get the hub out, you destroy the bearing. I found out the hard way).
Should be about it. there's a few small items like the clutch engagement switch so that you can't start the car unless you have the pedal on the floor.. stuff like that.
I don't think it was an option. When I took mine out, it had a noticable buldge in the middle that the VG 5-sp did not. I emailed some pics to Uncle Pete one time. But I think my webshots account is dead now.
What makes you believe that the VEs came with and w/o lsd?

I found this on one of my websites, it's the options of transmissions you can buy:
A.T., SOHC
A.T., DOHC, locking differential
A.T., DOHC, non-locking differential
M.T., (DOHC), locking differential
M.T., (DOHC), non-locking differential

About the LSD, wasn't there a post here or at the BBS about the "test" to see whether or not the vehicle is equipped with or without? If I remember, get both fronts off the ground, and turn one. If the other side spins opposite, then you have LSD, if spins same direction, then it's equipped without. Someone please confirm or deny this.
Isaac, you've got it backwards.
1. jack up car.
2. put in NEUTRAL.
3. spin one wheel.
If it spins in the same direction, then you have VLSD.
If it spins in the opposite direction, then you do NOT have VLSD.
And yes, Jeff. the VE 5 spd came with and without it. which package and why, I don't know. I've got pics of my old tranny from that side on my webpage.
http://www.ee.utulsa.edu/~mblehm/pic...h/MVC-006S.JPG
this is a SUPPOSED non-LSD transmission, but I did the above "spin the wheel" test and it showed to have LSD.
the driver's side axle also has some different teeth on the inside end of it. VLSD equipped cars have a set of teeth that are angled about 45degrees about 1/2" from the end of the shaft. my VE had them when I removed the axle.

...having some problems with my account...but yeah...
If I remember correctly you can easily find out whether or not you have LSD by using the VIN, right?
I remember a year or so ago in "another place" somebody talking about it. Like if it's got a certain letter in the VIN then you have LSD, if not then you dont have LSD.
And for some reason I've got it in my head that all VE auto's are LSD?

150??? Well I might have to go check that out. I've been looking at around 1500 for the total conversion, 700 just for the transmision. Do you have any idea why the car is there? Like did it get hit from back, side, etc? Thanks again. I'll see ya on the caravan to the park

Here are some links. YOu think you might be able to make it?

If all of the RSVP and maybe people show up, we are at 57 people right now, and I'm sure others will show up.
