Manual Shifting Problems

Help!! This is driving me nuts. My 94 SE w/ 5 speed is having issues with 1st gear. Ok....here is the situation. First gear in my car is not engaging all of the way. The shift into 1st is clean. There isn't any notchiness or anything. It's just not engaging all of the way. This is causing the tranny to slip out of gear or not engage at all. When talking to a mechanic friend of mine, he mentioned that the most common prolem is with the shifter. That in a lot of models there is a nylon bushing that tends to break not allowing full movement of the shift linkage. Do Max shifters have this? Or is there adjustments that can be done? Please Help me with this. It's driving me to hate my car.

Mike.

one of seveal things could be happening!

1) Your shifter bushing that allows for the shifter to move when in place has been damaged (highly unlikely and shifting would be hard as hell to do)!

2) Your first gear in your tranny is messed up and one of the notches in it is bent, or warped (likely possibility unforutnately, get an estimate from a good local tranny shop).

3) your linkage is loose possibly and may just need to be adjusted properly (go to your favorite mechanic unless you might want to tackle this one, possibility)!

4) where the linkage meets your shifter is loose or damaged (unlikely if shifting in and out of gear is smooth, but check it by taking off the catalytic converter, and then the heat sheild and inspect the linkage to shifter connection).

5) If all else fails and you don't see the problem while looking at the shifter and linkage, and where the linkage meets the tranny, consult a very trustworthy mechanic or tranny shop for a free estimate!
