problem with brake lights and shifter...

As i depress the brake pedal when i want to shift out of Park, it wont shift; i have to push down the red pin in the front of the shifter to move it. Also none of the brake lights work when i step on the brake (all tailight and spoiler bulbs are ok). Ive replaced the fuse twice already and the shifter and lights would work for a bit then stop working again. Nothing is said about this in the owners or chilton manual, anyone know how to troubleshoot or fix this? TIA

I had the same exact problem with my 90se.
It appeared to me that all of my rear lights worked and lit fine.
I would replace a fuse every day or so. Then it began to happen more frequently. I took it to an electrician and he quickly found that one of my rear lamp terminals was the cause. It held the bulb, and even lit it, but it was melting all the plastic around it. He had to replace the terminal($20). That did the job.

A solution for the problem

I also had this problem w/my auto-tragic, however, I knew for a fact that my lights worked before it stopped shifting out of park. After some major frustration, I looked through my sometimes helpful Hayne's Repair Manual, and spotted a possible problem. The part is called a STOP LAMP SWITCH, and it is located above the brake pedal. When you locate this area, you will see two rectangular boxes (about 2x.5 in.)side-by-side. The SLS is the one closest to the gas pedal. You simply unplug the unit, unscrew the retaining nut (possibly may need a wrench to free it up), unscrew the unit, and install the new one. If you have checked your bulbs and your fuses, this has to be the problem, and I have no more problems since I replaced mine. Caution: this unit is sensative to how far you screw it in. For example, if you screw it in to deep, you have to depress the brake pedal much futher than normal to actuate the switch. And if you screw it in to shallow, the opposite will occur and your brake lights will become running day lamps! Get the picture. I probably left a few things out so just reply to the post again if you have a question.
