Steering Puimp Moan
Steering Puimp Moan
A while back I broke a steering pump hose, loosing all the steering pump fluid as I drove to my mechanic. As I pulled into their garage, I could no longer steer the car...just too hard. They ended up replacing the hose, and because of the lack of fluid and me driving it, they said I damaged the steering pump. From that point on, the car has the steering pump moaning sound which I could not stand. I couldn't stand that sounds anymore, so I bought a new one and installed it myself. I followed the instructions for bleeding (jacking the front of the car up and turning side to side) but the car still moans. I was wondering if there was something I missed in the steering pump replacment procedure or is there other damage that still exists. What else do you all recommend to do?
Moan
Mine has done this as well. If after running dry, did you use steering or ATF fluid? I was told that filling it completely with ATF will cause the moan while just topping a fully functional one off does not affect it. I was also told that it is best to turn the wheel from side to side with the front off the ground to relieve pressure/ stress and to do this with the engine off.
Power steering moan

Yeah, I used power steering fluid, and it is at the right level. Also did the bleeding procedure just as you said. What gives?

I had the exact experience with my 90. Does anyone know why the thing moans ? The fluid is at the right level and mine didn't even run dry.

Solution.....
I hate to say the word, but here it goes. Auto Zone. Yes, they have a new line of stuff from "Lucas." Lucas makes a "Power steering stop leak" that I have personally used and was very pleased with. I have not yet put it in my Max, but plan to. I used it on my sister's max after her pressure hose was replaced and it maoned. I didn't use it initially, but after it bagan leaking again due to a faulty washer three weeks later, I replaced the washer and used about half the Lucas bottle in filling up the resourviour and finished it off with standard PS fluid. Imediately there was no moan except what you could barely hear when turning the wheel all the way and listening for that specific noise. My 2 cents.
