Changed timing now engine light ON

Today I changed my engine timin and now my engine light comes on. Has anyone had this happen? I have a 91se with the Vg. I hooked up the timing gun pickup lead to the #1 plug wire and when I looked at the timing markes I noticed that the pointer was pointing to the 30* mark (farthest mark on the right) I then backed it down to the 20* mark and after doing so my check engine light started turning on and off intermittently. The care runs fine no backfires or rough idling what could be causing my check engine ligth to come on? And why was my timing at 30* and no problems?

Update

DUH... I didn't reset my ECU after I changed my timing. I don't know if every one needs to do this but I disconnected my batterry overnight and reconnected it in the morning and took it for a ride, enverything is okay now.

Re: Changed timing now engine light ON

Because the car wasn't in base timing mode. This is what you have to do to properly set the timing. The engine should be at normal operating temp, then turn off the engine and unplug the TPS (throttle position sensor). Next start the engine and rev it between 2-4k 3 times. Now if your idle isn't between 600-750rpm adjust so that it is. Once the idle is correct then you check the base timing. Stock is 15*BTDC, 19*BTDC should give you good results. After setting the timing turn off the engine and plug in the TPS. Now your done.
