My clear coat is coming off of my paint. What do I do?

I bought a 1998 black Maxima about a month ago, and the clear coat is coming off in a few areas (which I didn't notice when I bought it). In one area, about the size of a silver dollar near the bottom of the car on the passnger side door, it is just basically flaking off... I can take my thumb nail and flake it off. There are other areas of the car where it has started to come off as well (the top of the car looks like it has water spots, but it is actually where the clear coat has come off).

What can I do? Any suggestions? I don't want the bad areas to spread!

wouldn't I have to have all of the clear coat removed first? And then... wouldn't it be REALLY expensive to have a whole new coat of clear coat put on?

But, I guess that's what I have to do

Either get a new car or get a new paint job. To do it right the first layer of clear coats gotta come off.

I would compound the whole car, taking off that horribly aging cheap clearcoat (shouldn't flake off like that on a '98), then have a new coat applied or do it yourself. It can't be very expensive, like repainting the car would. But don't get a new car as someone suggested!

If you bought it from a dealer go back to them and try and get some money back. Maybe go back to the person who sold it to you if it was private and complain.

I spoke to a body shop about clear coating a whole car last year and said it would cost about $2,000. They have to pull off all the trim and usually the front and rear windows to do it properly.

I bet the car has been repainted by some rookie just to sell the car.

no getting around it, its gonna be expensive to repair. Look into insurence possible? if its gonna be that much? maybe a little fraud hear or there? be creative
