I test mounted a 16x8 RX7 rim today on the front. The off set is 50mm. The rim actually measures 9" from lip to lip. It fit nicely. Their was 5/8" (0.625") clearance from the inside lip of the rim to the strut housing.

Is 5/8" going to be enough with tires mounted?

What offset are most 8" wide rims for the Maxima?

Most manufactures indicate that their 225/50/16 tires have a width of ~9.100" (mounted on a 7" wide rim), so that should leave 0.455" of clearance on the inside.

When the tire is under stress from cornering will it flex and rub the shock mount?

I dont want to buy spacers if I dont have to. The out side rim lip lined up perfectly with the fender. The only problem is that the center caps dont fit because the spindal sticks out way too far I can live with that and mabye tire reach could hook me up with some caps that might work.

Thanks for any help

I have 18X8's with 235's X 40's. They work fine and I haven't had any problem with rubbing.
What size tire are you going with on that rim?
Regarding your 5/8th of an inch question, you should have at least 1/2 inch of clearance, and this also depends on the amount of tire flex, which will depend on how stiff and short the sidewall is.
Hope this helps a little.

Wow, 50 offset? how much space do you have from the inside of the fender to the rim?

Car w/o Name: I plan on going with 225/50's that will leave 0.455", so thats just a hair under 1/2"

Cifero: I didnt check that.

What off set are your rims?

That's ok I think (.455).
What's the type of tire?
sidewall stiffness should be ok with those 50's and the gap you have.
have fun thru those turns.
wooooohoooooo

I am leaning toward Dunlop SP5000ASY, Pirelli P7000SS or Yokohama AVSDB, Performance All Season...

But if I get wild and Santa is good to me, LOL I'll go with Mich. Pilot $ports

According to the folks at O-Z Racing, the proper offset for 17 x 8 wheels with 235/45/17 tires is 35-40mm...

Yep, thats what I mostly have seen, but the 16x8's @ +50mm seem to fit ok. I could not go with a 235 or 245 tire because they would be too wide on the rim, but I think with a 225 they will fit.

At +40mm its only a little bit further out than +50mm, 0.38" or ~3/8". It looked to me that if I was to go to +40mm or +35mm with an 8" rim, the rims/tire would be stiking out past the top outer fender lip and it would spray rocks and mud up the side of the car.

The NA 300ZX rims fit fine and measure 16x7.5 and the are +45mm, that rim probably measures 8.5" lip to lip, so including the difference in off set, their would be 1.071" of clearance -vs- what I have now 0.625, a difference of 0.446" or ~7/16".

If there's any way you can post pics of the RX7 wheels once there mounted with tires, or even some pics of just the rim on the car from your trials this weekend, I'd love to see what they look like.

Ummmm. I wouldn't worry about your tires rubbing under sidewall deflection, unless you have suspension components dragging on the road next to your contact patch. Just check the fronts for clearance, fully loaded (car on ground) with steering lock to lock. I have 18x8.5's with a 45 mm offset. They look great. I actually prefer a higher offset-it prevents the 4x4 look that can easily happen due to the fender shape of the Max.

I'm not sure, but my gut feeling is it will fit.

Hey Mardi...

I have Pirelli P7000ss. They are good tires for the money.
They last pretty well as far as miles for the life of the tire. My buddy just bought Bridgestone RE730's for his GS400. They are excellent tires that have a slight lip on the edge of the sidewall. I believe this is for protection of the rim (if the rim and tire combois even). It's a nice touch.
I think 235's might work on your car with the set up your doing. I think it'll look tough.
