Test Pipe CEL

Test Pipe CEL
okay, for those of you who have this, what if anything did you do to avoid tripping the CEL? mine keeps giving me the same CEL of having way-off readings from there being no catylic converter what-so-ever. since i have the 98 (i can't remember which years are different), my last o2 sensor is right after the testpipe/cat area so it registers the problems. anyone know what i can do to get around this so my car doesn't think it's running off and throw the codes? thanks!

I am suppose to be getting one. From what I know from another member here he says his CEL comes on at times and thats because of the test pipe. He also has a 98 like myself and the person that started this thread. I will post myself if I keep on getting it, btw thats something you may have to reset all the times.

I do have a custom test pipe 2.5 that replaced my cat converter.
My yellow service engine light is always on.
I ran the codes at my friends shop. Catalyst problem is the only code that shows up.
My friend is a licensed mechanic and licensed smog tech. He said running a straight pipe or custom test pipe is not a big problem, except for the fact that the light comes on and its not good for the enviroment.
The way he explained it to me: at high speeds the EGR releases vacuum pressure. He said the car will have less back pressure but more free flow (for the speed demon inside me). He said over time that the EGR will have more carbon build up. Custom Test Pipe = Use at your own risk.
As far as gas mileage is concerned I get less in the city. Not a big problem for me. I love chevron 91 here in So Cali.
my engine / exhaust mods include: PR CAI, UR UDP, Stillen Flywheel, ACT clutch, Stillen Y pipe 2.5, custom test pipe 2.5, Greddy Cat-back SP 2.5

well, i have pretty much all the main boltons (obviously, by my sig). my problem with the CEL is that it only waits about half an hour at most driving time before it comes on. the thing is, i know the computer isn't going to let me run 100% to my car's capacity. it's getting the off code after the "cat", so i'm pretty sure that it might change a thing or two on it's own to compensate, would you guys think? that, and i'd like to be able to know if/when i get a CEL for something else. i didn't know if someone on here had it and had a way to bypass it. i'm sure if you had your ecu sent in for reprogramming, there's possibly a way around it. any input??

i have wsp test pipe too and like it.. i recomend get the one with o2 insert. and NO CEL light.
edit: i think you better email them at warpspeedperformance@direcpc.com for more info.

I got CEL light with mine, it's only obvious cause the reading of the rear O2 is going to have a lot more carbon and other crap in it.
I drove with a GForce ECU in my 97 for 4 months so I'm used to the yellow light.

well, as far as the egr code, i'm going to (in the next few days) go through my egr system as much as i can and clean it out. i'm hoping that might be the suspect. i dunno what i'm gonna do about the rear o2 sensor....

Did any of you guys find a resolution to this? 3 days after the test pipe, I get the same P0420 code. I can buy a new O2 sensor & replace it, however, I'm afraid since there is no cat, it will come back AGAIN!!
Any help would be appreciated.

dashingmax, i know this is a little out there (i have the same cel still), but if you were to do something like an ecu upgrade, you could fix it. since we both have 97+, we would have to buy a 95-96 ecu anyways and send it to jim wolf. if we bought a 95 ecu to upgrade for our car, it'd be obd I.... another solution, a good friend of mine works at autozone. he says he knows you can get "dummy" o2 sensors that send a good signal no matter what. i think he said they're around $100.

Will try if the light comes back on!

brianV, does your CEL come on instantly with the older ECU in your 97 or does it take a few days? for all the others here who ask about the CEL in reguards to the test pipe: every 2 or 3 days i get a rear catalyst code and occasionally a high/low flow EGR code. i reset them whenever they come on. my car gets pretty good gas mileage with them. as for the long term side effects, that's unknown to me.

of course if u have no cat ur gonna get a CEL light no matter where the las t02 sensor is...ur car is producing way to much hydrocarbons and the 02 sensor is picking that up and tripping ur CEL light...two ways around it....put a cat on because on an N/A CAR test pipes dont do shizit but make stinky and pollution.....or buy an 02 emulator kit from ebay
