I have only heard goo things about the short throws. Maybe he was complaing because he didn't have it set right or because it was stiffer because of other parts replaced in the conversion.

omfg my short shifter is killing me. I mean i love the throw.... but the freakin stick won't go in gear sometimes becaues its so damn stiff. This started happenin after i got my 120k mile service.... required draining my redline tranny oil and they put the normal stuff in. I gotta put redline back in there but w/o it... it's not cool!

Its a better feel for me personally. The shift is harder and you feel the notch when shifting. I'm an agressive shifter so I like the feeling. It's not unbearable or anything. Just handle the stick like a real man

Now I don't know what to do. I just purchased the Pacesetter STS and had planned on installing it this weekend, but I don't know now becuase the reason I brought it was so that I would get smoother shifting. What do you guys think?

smoother shifting? Well, i'm sure u'll like the throw. Just make sure u have redline tranny oil.... then you're set. If you don't... then expect knotchy shifting

So what are you saying, the pace setter short shifter is cool if you only get redline trany oil? if you dont have the redline tranny oil dont get it?

If you're unsure about a mod, the best thing to do is meet up w/ someone who has the mod and test it out. The first week i had the sts in, i hated it. It was so stiff. Now I can't even tell. It feels stock to me. I think it was a combination of breaking in, and getting used to it.

I like the stiff short throw, but if Im parallel parking in reverse, then try to put it in first, 90% of the time it wont go into gear and I have to mess around for a minute to get it into gear. Really annoying but the other benefits are worth it. My synchros are probably fuct or something. Will redline fluid help this? And where can I get that stuff by the way? Any parts store?

I haven't heard people really complain about them, they do make the throws a lot shorter.. I tested it on 190hpkillas car and I couldn't believe the shifter was already in gear, it seemed like it's half way in.. makes the shifts quicker since there is less way for the shifter to travel. We raced a 95-96 Max with 3 people in his car and ****ted on him pretty bad, shifts are so much faster.

I have that same problem goin from 2nd to 3rd.... it really starts to **** me off now.

Yea it's best if u go w/ redline tranny oil. But i need the moola to have the regular stuff drained and replaced w/ redline. My shifting was alot more smoother than it is w/ the regular stuff

I forget the physics behind why it makes the throw shorter, but it does. It has to do with the position of the bend on the STS. I don't have a pic of my stock one, but if I showed you a comparison, you'd see the difference immediately.

pic of STS

Stock is floaty?? Whoa, that's the first time I've heard anyone ever say that. Everyone on the non.org world seems to comment about how notchy the shifting is in 4th gen maxs (and possibly other gens, not sure) stock. Have you ever driven a Metro/cavalier/neon/many other cheaper domestic manuals? Now that's floaty.

The one thing I've heard people discuss as far as a negative is, if you start getting too short, there's a possibility of killing your synchros, because they're not designed to aid the car in shifting that quickly.

I have a 97 5-speed. I had my mechanic put the Stillen STS in for me about 1 year ago. He was in the middle of the install and called me to let me know that the pin for the STS was too short and might cause some damage to the tranny over time. After putting it in I couldn't get the car to go into first gear without grinding it. I drove half way home using the first gear two times and finally called it quits.

Called my mechanic and he said bring it back without using first gear. He kept the car for a day or so. After inspecting the tranny he said that too many of the syncros were broken and that the transmission would need to be rebuilt. Needless to say. I had him do a full overhaul. He also stated that he didnt reccomend using the Stillen STS pin, because it would probably cause the syncros to break again. He found a pin that is longer than the Stillen pin but shorter than the stock one.

My cars transmission is working perfectly and havent had one mis-shift or ground gear since the rebulid.

Ps. Sorry for not knowing the technical term for the "pin".

Which I think is the problem with some of us who are having problems getting into gear. I guess I should start double clutching

Mine pivot ball is set only halfway on the threads at the shortest possible setting so, my suggestion to someone who doesnt have an STS already, is to NOT have it set that short. Maybe 1/2 to 3/4 of the shortest setting.

I'll go take some pictures later on. I originally had Redline, but when I had some warranty transmission work they put in factory fill. It wasn't THAT noticeable, but I would take the Redline if given the chance. My STS is set on the shortest throw and my gears engage well almost all the time.

That's the STS, momo race air leather aluminum, and momo universal shift boot, with threaded collar.

in my opinion, i don't like short throw shifters. i have never driven a maxima w/sts, but i have driven a m3, wrx imprezza, eclipse, jetta, and a few other cars w/the sts @ work

Thanks guys for all your imput on the STS, I think I'm still going to install it, but set it at 1/2 or 3/4 of the way and see how it feels. To be safe

Thanks again

Remember, if you dont think its short enough, you can always adjust it.

Nadir: Do you have the Pacesetter or Stillen STS? Your shifter still looks really tall, mine is almost half that height.

I put in the pacesetter maybe a month or two ago... NO COMPLAINTS from me... I loved it from the moment I first put it in, shifts are soo much faster, and I actually feel like I'm putting it in gear instead of just shoving my shifter around in a bucket of butter... I dont have any prob finding gears or whatever, and I have mine set at about 60-70% down, closer to short then long. My only complaint is, my stock shifter say lower (I had cut it a good bit..) and now having this high shifter bugs me... but i dont want to cut it for fear of having the gear problems...

its worth doing it, i dont know how these things get a bad rep
