Alloy vs. Steelies - Weight Difference?

Does anyone know what the weight of the steel rims are? And the weight of the alloys ('97 5-spoke)?

Thanks.

Hmm...
I weighed the rim with the stock tire on it, & it was exactly 40 lbs.
Does the tire alone weigh 20 lbs?!!

So the consensus seems to be that the alloy is about 20 lbs. How about the steel rim?

dashingmax...Does the 40 lbs. include the steelie or alloy? Wasn't sure if you were referring to stock SE. If referring to a steelie, does anyone know what a tire weighs? I'll do the math.

Thanks.

Sounds like there's no difference in weight between the steel rims and alloy.

Thanks for the info folks.

It certainly does. Hence one reason for tire shaving.

Wrong, big difference. Although they may weigh the same, the 16inch alloy is much heavier (rotational wise) than the 15inch steelie.

Interesting observation. Do you mean that most of the weight is distributed to the circumference of the wheel rather than the center?...or are you describing the difference between a 15 and 16 inch wheel?

Either way, is there a noteable difference in ride performance?

Thanks.

You got it...I was reffering to increased rotaional inertia due to the distribution of the wheels mass in relation to the distance from the center of the wheel from the eddge. As far as handling performance, a larger diameter rim will yeild crisper cornering and more precise handling (if combined with the proper size tire). Acceleration wise, between a 15 and 16 inch, accelaration AND braking will be effected, but not as dramatic as a 15inch to 18inch upgrade.

Hey Raceen, how much HP do you think is lost when going from 16" steel wheels to 16" alloys to 18" alloys?! Just a rough estimate will do.

I beleive from 16" alloys to 18", using average wheel weights, around 2-5 max hp. Again, that's using average wheel weights. The numbers grow exponentiaily when you start getting into the 22" - 24" SUV rims!!!

Steelies with tires and no hub caps weigh around 41 lbs each.
I just sold a set and I put 2 wheels and tires into each box. The weight came up to like 82.X lbs for that box. That is around 41 per wheel and tire.

My 2001 16" wheels weigh exactly 20 lbs each without the tire.
