95-96 faster then 97-99?

95-96 faster then 97-99?
Been reading the board for a few days now, and I hear that the 95-96 Max's are faster then the 97-99's. Why?
Reason asking is I'm in the market for a black/black SE 5 spd 95-96. They are hard to come by, but I would spend the extra $$ on a 97-98 black/black with less miles. If they are faster, is it a marginal difference?

dude there is just no question get the 95-96 everyone who ownns a 97-99 will tell you the design is totally better. also the engine wear on the 95-96 is probably a lot. just look on the back of a 95-96 and compare that to a 97-99 you will know what im talking about!

If that doesn't sway you from the 95-96 then go for them. Also, notice the difference in the rear bumper on the 5 MPH pole test in the 97-99 test... thats a huge difference. I've been rear ended twice and my bumper is fine, no amount of attention will stop an idiot from rear ending you... Would you rather have it buffed out, or wait 2 months to get it from the body shop?
Personally, i think you'd be better off getting a lower milage/newer car but thats just me...

well, they changed the design for a reason. saftey probobly as posted above with crash test. The only thing thats different is the models. GLE GXE and SE. GXE have 205 ft. lbs of torque while the other two have 190 ft. lbs. othe than that, its just weight.

Correction, there are no differences in HP or torque from any of the models 95-99

NO THEY ARE NOT FASTER. Granted they are a little bit lighter, this is so minimal, that its nothing. I raced my friend in her 96 SE auto and beat her by about 1 car up to 60. Now her car has 120K miles on it, and I don't care what Craig Mack says
but thats enough to offset any bit of the 95-96's being faster (as compared to my 97 with 57K)
This argument has been going on forever, and all the 95-96 guys will say yes they're faster, but that's all they'll say but like I said its so minimal if anything. When it comes down to it, although looks are subjective, the front and rear styling of the 97-99 Maximas are far superior to those of the early 4th gen. and the crash tests have shown that they are better in that category too. Peace.

having spent the last ten years in South Florida (W.P.Beach) and Houston I strongly urge you to avoid black car/black leather. My last car was a black I30t and it was very uncomfortable in the summer. I loved it (it was a rare 5spd) but I ended up selling it (on a cold January day).

I agree. I got rear-ended in my '98 SE by a friend of mine at about 5mph. His Honda Accord was damaged to the point where he couldn't close his hood ($2500 worth of body work), and I merely have two scratches on my bumper. That's one tough bumper!

However I will agree 99% of people like the '97-'99 SE wheels over the eariler ones. However the tails I have to disagree with you about. BOTH the 4th Gen series tails are fugly. But the '97-'99s are worse than the '95-'96s. We have a little touch of smoke in the white part that looks nicer.-Cyrus

Hell yeah the spaced out letters look better. I hate when people put the 97-99 letters on 95-96 cars. It looks so stupid and cheap.

The front of the '97-'99 is too pointy for the smooth curves of the rest of the car, the inner tails are too slanted, the MAXIMA squished together looks ugly, your trunk sticks out too much, your headlights are made of plastic, and to top if all off they weigh over 100 pounds more. But I'd still buy one if I got a good deal on it.-Cyrus

hey now, i got rear ended before and it just needed to be buffed out...and my front can take a lot as well but i know the 97-99 are heavier for their heavier bumpers so they can take more but the 95-96 looks a lot better and more importantly, since i've been on this board, i've heard a lot of problems of recalls coming from later model 4th gens....the 95 is the only one with no restrictions period, join my family baby!!!

i dont think either are ugly

and the safety thing is a bit messed up
but in a rear end collision, almost 100% of the time the person who hits you in the back is responsible for the damages.. I'll take the $ and use it to get a 97 bumper with reinforcements and a new trunklid

I guess I don't understand how a 95 front end is better than a 97+, the foglight area looks incredibly plain, it has foggy headlights with a bland looking black plastic grill. I can see how some like the back end, because different people like different things. I don't mind the placement of the tail lights versus the 97+ or even the spread out M A X I M A but just that ugly A$$ crease is what I can't get over. It makes the back end look kind of bloated or something. A friend of mine, she has almost an identical car to me, a 96 SE, with every single option the same as my 97 SE (except she had 120K miles to my 57K) and the only thing I noticed between the 2 is her ugly ugly steering wheel and that her cup holder area was different, much smaller, not really a cup holder but I don't know if all 95-96's are like that. Other than that, our cars were just about interiorly identical. I like both cars, just something about the 97-99's that I like a lot more.
