Auto Transmission question

I have a 95 Maxima GLE with 113,000 miles. Lately I have started feeling the transmission shifting, specially going from 1st to 2nd gear. Previously I had always admired the smooth shifting.

Is it something to worry about? What can I do about it?

Any advice would be appreciated.

SK

Have your tranny fluid flushed and filled with new fluid.

I would have serviced my transmition fluid, but the Haynes manual that I own says to empty it, then measure how much came out, and then replenish with the same amount. What kind of ghetto explanation is this? BTW what all do I need? Just the fluid? Which are some good fluids? Plus will I be needing a filter? Thanks

Same here. Its not the tranny fluid. It only shifts hard on low RPM's. If I go past 3000 RPM, it shift smoothly. I got used to it and its not that bad.

Common...

It seems it is common to most 4th gens. Lurch forward in the morning and then buttery smooth when warm. Has anyone experienced this with normal tranny fluid and found it gone when going to Redline synthetic?

Hey Chino. You should call a place that has the tranny fluid pumper and ask how many quarts it takes to fully flush a tranny. You'd have to buy whatever amount of fluid they tell you and it could be a little expensive but that would guarantee that none of the old fluid remains when they do the flush.

Here's deadrx7conv's method of completely flushing the ATF:

drain/fill
Or, buy 5 feet 3/8"ID (I think) clear hose($2) at HomeDepot/Lowes/Plumbingsupply....
Connect(use hose clamp) to either A)the pressure line from transmission(see ATF COOLER FAQ) or B)connect to transcooler exit point(flushes cooler).
Drain/refill transmission(~4.5 quarts).
Overfill by 4 quarts(optional) and start motor. Dirty ATF will be pumped out of clear hose into container of your choice. Do not let ATF pump run dry(it will gurgle/burp/bubble before running dry). Always monitor fluid level in container. Stop before the amount that exits is greater than amount used. And, if fluid is not clean, add ~4 more quarts and redo. You will see the fluid in the hose change color(means you are done).
Best if you have 2nd person(to yell at) in car(to shut off engine when container hits the 4 quart mark) with key while you hold the hose(don't hit neighbor's house with ATF).
This will flush your torque converter. The new fluid will displace the old fluid just like the flush machine. And it will save you money because you are not wasting new fluid(drain/refill method).

The total capacity of the transmission is 10 qts. I recommend having at least 12 qts. on hand to ensure you have enough to completely flush it out.

[self serving plug] Redline is a great synthetic ATF, but Amsoil synthetic ATF is the leader in wear protection and price, as well as being capable of longer drain intervals. Discounts Available.[/self serving plug]
