Miles on your 5speed with no problems?

Ok, I've seen quite a few posts on the dreaded carrier bearing failures but sometimes you don't see all the other ones without problems... Considering I'm looking at a '97 5 speed with '96k miles I'm wondering if I am just waiting for a big bill...

How many trouble free miles have you got on your 5 speed?

(and as a side note, will a dealer mechanic be able to figure out if the carrier bearings are on their way out?)

Thanks,

Jim

Re: Miles on your 5speed with no problems?
i have a 97 5spd with 86k miles and no problems with the tranny what so ever. i dont htink a mech could tell the bearing life without tearing the tranny out and apart. as long as the tranny hasnt been abused, i think the tranny hsould last a long time.

Jim,

The vast majority of these failures seem to occur between 60-80K miles. Of course, there are some people with both higher and lower mileages who have had the problem, but the odds are better.

There is no way to tell if there is going to be a problem in the future without tearing into the transmission. You can see if the car already developed the problem and needs to be fixed and the owner is trying to dump it on you. Just look at the axle shaft seals to see if they're leaking and grab the shafts themselves to check the amount of freeplay in them.

Thanks for the info guys. I couldn't see any leaks under the car at the dealer but who knows how long it sat there...

Jim

Ahhh...the power of search:

http://forums.maxima.org/showthread....5&pagenumber=1

I had this question as well several months ago, and got some great help from dwapenyi as well as Keven97SE. Read through the thread for a more detailed description of the problem, and read the replies to my posts for good ways to tell if there is a problem with your potential car.

Good luck!

Thanks for the info! I actually did search and that just led me to the question on this post. No one posts 'hey, my 5 speed doing great at 200k!' so I was wondering if most people had no troubles with them.

Typically (for most things anyway) there can be 100 good experiences for every bad experience but you only hear about the bad ones... I was hoping that this would be the case for the 5 speeds.

Thank you,

Jim

I opened my transmission up around 60K miles and *thought* I had no problems, because I had no leaks and no noise. However one of my differential carrier bearings was shot. Next time I pull the tranny off my car, I am opening it again to 1) check the condition of everything and 2) figure out why the F it gets stuck in reverse.

98 SE - only 48,000 kms / 30,000 miles

No major problems. Intermittent chattering (has not done it for quite some time). While I believe the tranny will probably last quite some time (assuming it is not beaten on too hard), it is one of the weaker pieces of a very well built car. The stock clutches are not very good.

car has 110,000 miles, did conversion and tranny has 55,000 now, about to put a 1,000 miles on it...i've been abusing it or atleast i think i have since i'm not used to driving stick and not sure exactly what is abusive (may be doing same thing everyone else is doing) but things going great and have ACT clutch

peeling off at 2nd is easy, but i thought i would be able to do so in third and probably 4th....

Ok, you guys have convinced me! I bought it... No leakage from the transmission and the dealer *said* the mechanic checked it thoroughly... Of course he missed the fact that the instrument lights don't work and neither do the tail lights I checked and its not a fuse but that's a topic for another post...

Thanks for the info guys! Hopefully it will convince others looking at 5 speeds in the future...

I bought my 99 SE 5 speed with 47,000 miles a month ago and it needs a new clutch it's slipping baddly is this a sign of abuse by the previous owner?Even though the Tranny feels good and has no problems(i think) but now this thread has got me a little worried.

Yeah your 99 might have seen some burnouts...but my 98 had a driver for 22K miles who wore out the RSA's to 40%....if you have the factory tires(GY RSA's) then assume he only burnt down the tires 4 awhile.?>?> who knows>?>? you have powertrain warranty til 60K have it looked over before then...you have a while, sorry about the clutch.
