ACT-HDMM Problem...Help !!

OK Ever since I installed my clutch ACT-HDMM I have an unsite-full "grinde" when I engage first and reverse to start moving..its a low tone grinde...Its when I already have the car fully in gear and clutch pedal to the floor and I start to bring my foot off the clutch and as I move foward the littlest bit I feel and hear a grinding noise coming from in where the clutch is. It disapears after the car is in motion and the clutch is engaged...I really dont know what this is....I think its a bad flywheel..its been doing this since I did the change and hasnt gone away...I have the HD-MM clutch kit from ACT. Please help me guys...My macanic, that I should have had done it but was away on vaction, said its all normal and its the two surfaces of the clutch and flywheel meeting and nothing to worry about but its really annoying and it feels like something is way wrong...Tom (njmaxselt) heard it and we are both puzzeled on what it could be. I kind of have a feeling its going to go away bewcause it was really bad when I first had it installed but I do have about 2500 miles on the clutch.. Please Help

Email me if you know what the problem is, or if its normal with this clutch not to be smooth

Was the flywheel resurfaced? The throwout/release bearing changed? Where in the wheel pedal travel does the clutch "grab" (how far from the bottom?)

To elaborate on the description of his noise.... When the clutch grabs, it both feels and sounds like 2 very dry surfaces coming together. As if the flywheel or friction disk is very corse. Almost like a chatter, but you can't really feel it. Matt said the tranny shop resurfaced the flywheel but lets not rule that out just yet.

Anybody else with an ACT clutch feel anything like this or is it nice and smooth?

I've had the same problem since day one with my ACT clutch, it was installed about 6 months ago, there is well over 3k miles put on it, I put in a new Stillen lightened flywheel at the same time as the ACT clutch, the chatter only occurs when shifting in first or reverse from a complete stop, I have tried different rpm/release point combos to see if it is just me but the car makes the noise no matter what, so far I am 100% completly satisfied with the add performance of this clutch, and a lil puzzled as to why it makes the chatter noise

I've got the same symptoms as Matty. I find it's better if I start to release the clutch at a higher engine rpm. If I bog it, it sounds awful. I did the clutch myself and just sanded the flywheel, so maybe it is related to the flywheel. Who knows, I just figured it's one of those aftermarket quirks that pop up now and then.

Its not even like a chatter...its more of like a deep ecoed grinde sound that only happens from a stop. I Love the performance of the clutch as well I am really puzzeled on what that sound it. I called ACT and they said "it should not make that noise at all after all those miles, it should be gone by now." Maybe Im not driving my car hard enough to bring those two surfaced together to smooth them out ??

Mine has 5K on it, some on the track, so it's definitely broken in. The performance is fine, it's just that sound that irritates me at times. It wouldn't bother me as much if I didn't think it would be a red flag to someone when I go to sell the car.

Well Matt, it sounds like there's nothing wrong with the clutch. I guess the trade off with a more performance oriented clutch is a bit of noise as it grabs. You car drove fine when we went for that test run with the new springs. You do release at low RPM's, I do the same when I drive a manual. I think your OK, just get used to the new mod noise!

The thing that Im worried about it that some people on the board with the same ACT-HD-MM clutch, dont have the sound when disengaging the clutch...And to boot, ACT sais it should not be making the noise and offered to send out another clutch next day...I think there might be a defective part somewhere along the line...

Call ACT and tell them about it for me..so they know im not the only one (661) 940-7555 and ask for Dave Paterson
