Engine light been on for a year

Yo!!!!
My light has been on for a year now. Brought it in to get it fixed. paid damn near $700 dollars for something that they said was wrong with my transmission. within a couple hours light came back on. went back and they said it could be something else. I'm not trying to spend all this money for them to try and figure out what's wrong with my car. Has anybody had an engine light problem. I use to pump my gas with the car running but i don't do that anymore. I was told that i might have air in my gas tank. What's the deal.............

just a thought - under the rear bumper on the left side, there is a black box/canister that i think collects gas overflow. it has some hoses connected to it, so make sure they're all in good condition, cause if not, they will trip the light.
